Dancescriptions - Peter Kleine Schaars
Dancescriptions combines many styles derived from pop music with techniques from classical composition. The styles are not the focal point; the true musical definition comes from the interpretation of the transition passages. After the statement of a rhythmic and melodic cell the music is developed from the thematic material in the appropriate style - soul music, disco, merengue, ballad and rock - in the Big Band tradition. A brief history: Pentecost Monday was a special day for schools in Yorkshire (England). There were a variety of activities. The pupils of Sabine Baring-Gould would meet with the children of a nearby village. It seemed like a good idea that during the walk would be sung. But she could not find a suitable song and decided to write one by herself. "Onward Christian Soldiers" was the result. It soon became very popular, though she herself was not entirely satisfied with the rhyme scheme. The melody used (St. Gertrude) was by the famous English composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan. Back to now: Gawan Roberts, has given the hymn a proper update. He gave the still popularsong a solid rock beat and added daring harmonies. So it's popular, for current generations, again for years. Onward!

Hangin' Ten is one of two movements of a composition called "Barefeet." The works may be played separately or together in a concert. This movement opens with sounds that are a bit mystical, then moving to a Latin jazz/rock style. It is quite syncopated and a fun song for your audience. The ranges are mostly within a Grade 4, though the last note of the Trumpet is C. Rhythmically it is challenging and a bit reminiscent of "West Side Story."

"Hard to Say I'm Sorry" is one of the greatest hits by US rock band Chicago. It was the first single record from the "Chicago 16"-album (1982). The song went to no. 1 on the Billboard charts and stayed there for two weeks. Produced by David Foster, the song was given a typical early 80's sound with synthesizers and heavy guitars dominating the sound. The album-version of the song included a part two of the song, "Get Away", a up-tempo song featuring the famous horn-section of the band.

When Men and Mountains Meet - Scott Watson
Commissioned by the East Stroudsburg Area School District, this work displays the effort and determination it must have taken to establish this community in the Pocono mountains with wall upon wall of rock to be blasted and great masses of earth to be moved. It opens with a broad, somewhat dissonant statement representing the settlers first intimidating encounter with the mountain, followed by a faster, insistent theme as the area is settled and developed. An impressive work for young bands that makes us aware that truly great things are done "when men and mountains meet."
