Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes. According to legend, she lives in Kilauea, one of the worlds most active volcanoes. The chant of her devotees while Kilauea spews lava and fire into the sky is the basis of this composition. The first of four connected sections is Tribute, where the chant starts as a solo voice that adds weight to the chant with each repetition. The Awakening begins with an ominous mood that builds to an explosive climax as Pele wakes and reveals herself in full glory. March to the Sea comes at a faster tempo as two themes, creator and destroyer, interweave during Peles unyielding journey to the ocean, reaching fever pitch as Fire Meets Water.

Pursuing his interest in the Turkish peoples, the composer created this work for orchestra in 1930. It is a richly melodic suite notable for its characteristically oriental turns of phrase. This work is presented in four movements: Caravan, which depicts a steady journey over rolling sand dunes; At Rest, alternately tranquil and spirited; Night, serene in nature with a slight touch of mystery; and Festival, a dance-like finale with unyielding exuberance. All the movements use material from folk music of the region combined with a wonderful pallet of wind-instrumental colors. An exotic and colorful Turkish fabric in music.

The first movement, El Butaquito, is based on a very lively folk-song of the same name and is characterised by its many contrasting rhythms. The title of the third movement, Ballaviejo, means 'Antique Dance', in which the word antique refers to the rhythms that were taken to America by Africa's black population. Paladin (heroic knight) was written for the music society De Heibloem from Meeuwen, Belgium and tells the story of the disastrous Saint Nicholas Day of 1648. In the first half of the seventeenth century, the mercenary armies of Karel van Lorreinen terrorized several villages in the province of Limburg. Between 1,500 and 1,600 farmers gathered in Peer on December 6, 1648, to battle against the cruel mercenaries who looted and burned down their villages. The brave farmers did not stand a chance and were ambushed in Meeuwen and within quarter of an hour there were four hundred fatalities and at least as many wounded. In history books, this encounter is referred to as the shortestbattle ever. A truly heroic work suitable for all concert programmes.
