Gayaneh, Four Excerpts from (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Khachaturian, Aram - Van der Beek, Wil

In 1941, Khatchaturian composed a ballet soon to be known throughout the world - Gayaneh. In this piece the composer describes the landscape of his native country Armenia, and the people who tried to build the country to create a happy life there. Evil powers, however, try to destroy the peaceful work. Gayaneh is a young ordinary woman who cares greatly for her village. In addition to the fight for the village she also fights for her own happiness. Through the Vulcan's Eye (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Smith, Robert W.

High atop a red mountain overlooking the magnificent city of Birmingham, Alabama, stands an iron sentinel, a monument of Vulcan that keeps watch over the "City of Steel." Through the Vulcan's Eye is comprised of four melodies, each aurally describing a view from the top of the mountain and inspired by the composer's childhood experiences in Alabama's largest metropolis. Broad brush strokes of sound blanket the work, enhanced by brilliant solo passages and total involvement from the percussion. A grand work on a grand scale!Duration: 7.15

In the Winter of 1730: A River's Journey

This dramatic composition, crafted into four continous movements, is a musical portrait that reflects nearly 300 years of Ohio history. Shawnee Village, 1730: represented by a haunting recorder solo (or flutes) accompanied by clarinets and a variety of percussion sounds. 1812 Era: Powerful drums introduce The Battle of Thames where Chief Tecumseh lost his life. Portsmouth, 1903: A Copland-like introduction is followed by a lively rendition of original folk music, bringing to life the city of Portsmouth, Ohio at the turn of the 20th century. The Beauty of the River (For All Time): A beautiful and expressive theme brings this work to a glorious and highly impressive finish. SUPERB!

Sancho and the Windmills (Symphony No. 3, 'Don Quixote,' Mvt. 3)

The third of four movements in Robert W. Smith's epic work Don Quixote, the listener is treated to the comic relief that permeates the entire literary story line. Beginning with the opening bassoon solo characterizing Sancho Panza on his donkey, the composer uses unique percussion effects to convey the hapless hero and his never-ending battle to stay up on his horse Rocinante. The listener can hear the rusty suit of armor as Don Quixote continually falls from his horse in one adventure after another. Perhaps the most memorable imagery in the entire literary epic is Don Quixote's battle with the windmills. Using harmonic effects combined with unique percussion scoring, the composer has brought this tale to life through the unfocused eyes of the knight. Funny, yet with a sense of sadness, Sancho and the Windmills will be a favorite moment in the performance of Symphony No. 3 "Don Quixote".

The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Earth, Wind & Fire was formed by jazz drummer Maurice White, whose aim was to mix various music styles to produce a unique sound. Combined with excellent song writing and fine performances this sound made Earth, Wind & Fire one of the most influential soul groups of the seventies. In subsequent decades they experienced varying success but this medley reflects the heyday of this legendary group. In his job as staff arranger with the Royal Marine Band of the Dutch Navy, Peter Kleine Schaars wrote many top class arrangements. The talent of the musicians in the band made it possible to write in such a way that they closely resembled the original works. Consequently this medley shines just like the original versions by Earth, Wind & Fire. Four famous songs have been used: In the Stone, Got to Get You into My Life, After the Love Has Gone and September. 0:08:40
