The Gilded Theatre - Kenneth Hesketh
The Gilded Theatre was commissioned by the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary. They gave the first performance on 10th August 2008, at St. John's Smith Square, London conducted by James Gourlay.The Gilded Theatre can, in some ways, be seen as a continuation of dramatic forms as presented in a previous piece by Hesketh, Diaghilev Dances. Unlike the Dances, however the music in The Gilded Theatre is conceived as one continuous span and stretches of music are also subtitled and refer to stock characters or scenarios redolent of the commedia dell'arte or 17th Century French Theatre.The subtitles are Rideau, Les Idiots Ou Les Amants, Le Combat Commence, Desespoir, L'apparition, Folie, La Mort, Rideau. The music narative progresses through dramatic, comedic, romantic and aggressive moods supporting the idea of the abstract play to which the the above subtitles refer. Throughout the piece the composer has sought to challenge the players both technically and emotionally, and it is the players themselves who are in fact the protagonists in the piece.

£99.95Sinfonietta No.2 - A Sign of the Times (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
It was an interesting challenge to return to the form of a sinfonietta some twenty years after the last one. This work is not hugely problematic to play but was written without regard for technical demands, following a series of compositions that needed to take difficulty level into consideration. The work has five percussion parts but the tuned percussion, although desirable, can be omitted. As for the band parts, Oboe 2 is largely covered elsewhere but the colour of the cor anglais would be a definite enhancement to the overall sound. The work was written in 2025 when it seemed as if the world was a particularly volatile place.The first movement 'Foment' seeks to capture that menacing mood of unrest and the potential for violence that seemed to erupt without warning and without efforts to contain it from warmongers posing as peacemakers. The music is severe and focussed with just a short scherzo-like episode of levity to balance the quasi-military mood.'A Dream of Peace' takes a few moments to contemplate a different, more peaceful world and several ideas are considered before settling on the slow waltz-like melody. This uses a very tonal language but is given a particular hue by its use of sevenths and ninths and there are moments of stress which disrupt the tranquillity.In 'Call to Arms' the warlike mood returns with a sense of restless energy that drives the music to its conclusion.- Rob WiffinDuration: 14.00

The Swiss composer Franco Cesarini has waited a long time to write his first symphony and after years of considering and drafting, this Archangels Symphony, Symphony nr. 1 is a vast composition consisting of highly dramatic language, intense thematic developments and frequent polyphonic elaborations. The thematic material is taken from old Gregorian melodies that form the basis for the entire work, which is, despite the title, a non-programmatic work. It consists out of 4 movements: Gabriel, the gentle archangel; the supreme healer Raphael; the energetic archangel Michael, the Prince of the heavenly host; and surprisingly the archangel Urile, the 'forgotten' archangel. The First Shoot was written and first performed in 1935 for the ballet Follow the Sun. The original music was lost, but reconstructed for brass band, and later for orchestra by Christopher Palmer. This Concert Band arrangement is based on that orchestra score. It is a charming look back (one can imagine the music that might have accompanied a Charlie Chaplin movie!) Concert bands will experience a worthwhile challenge in bringing this wonderfully tuneful music to their audiences, as well as the broadening of their own musical experience.

From the Eye of the Storm
Mississippi composer, Ayatey Shabazz is a survivor of hurricane Katrina who lost both his home and the school where he taught to the storm. Soon after the storm was over Shabazz composed this stimulating and descriptive composition that explores the wide range of events and emotions he experienced during the tragic hurricane. Leader of the Class (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
Here's a piece that attacks the age old problem of how to challenge your best beginning students while not leaving behind the students of lesser abilities. The first Flute/Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Sax and Trumpet parts all contain a variation on the melody which should be performed by your best students. The 2nd parts to those same instruments are written at the regular beginning band level. Contains an optional keyboard part to help out in bands with instrumentation problems. It's a great motivator and will keep your best students challenged. Very Highly Reccommended!

The African Connection Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms. Obviously, the percussion section has a conspicious role to play, but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement. The introduction depicts the awakening of nature, and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa. The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana. In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblance to a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes. Challenge and please your percussion section with 'The African Connection'. Carl Wittrock's brede interesse voor de wereldmuziek resulteerde in dit op originele Afrikaanse ritmes gebaseerde concertwerk. Het slagwerk speelt uiteraard een opvallende rol, maar ook het orkest kan zich op een heerlijke manier uitleven. De inleiding schildert het ontwaken van de natuur, welke overgaat in een dans. Het motief van deze dans (Apollo) is afkomstig uit Gambia. De begeleiding bestaat uit een ostinaatpatroon van de balafon-meester Maudo Susa. De basis van het rustige middendeel is gelegen in het ritme van de Gigbo, een traditionele dans uit Ghana.
