The Danserye - Tielman Susato
For this collection of instrumental dances, the composer, musician and publisher Tielman Susato (ca. 1510-1570) focused on well-known folk melodies of his time. In 1551, the album was published by his own Antwerp company, bearing the title 'Het derde musyck boexken'. Manu Mellaerts has already made numerous transcriptions of renaissance works for concert band and this time he sought to create a suite of five dances, based on Susato's collection. Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms. Obviously, the percussion section has a conspicious role to play, but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement. The introduction depicts the awakening of nature, and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa. The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana. In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblanceto a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes. Challenge and please your percussion section with 'The African Connection'. Carl Wittrock's brede interesse voor de wereldmuziek resulteerde in dit op originele Afrikaanse ritmes gebaseerde concertwerk. Het slagwerk speelt uiteraard een opvallende rol, maar ook het orkest kan zich op een heerlijke manier uitleven. De inleiding schildert het ontwaken van de natuur, welke overgaat in een dans. Het motief van deze dans (Apollo) is afkomstig uit Gambia. De begeleiding bestaat uit een ostinaatpatroon van de balafon-meester Maudo Susa. De basis van het rustige middendeel is gelegen in het ritme van de Gigbo, een traditionele dans uit Ghana. The suite is constructed around a Norwegian folk tune. The melody is called "Dark Forebodings", and the words of the song revolve around thoughts and reflections on a future that can take unexpected, insecure, or perhaps dramatic and tragic turns.This is essentially a sad song with a beautiful melody. The folk tune itself is presented in the 2nd movement. In the 1st movement, the folk tune is joined with fleeting themes that indicate the unexpected; as if the music sometimesis confused as to which way to go. There are constant changes in atmosphere and feeling, from the harsh and dissonant, to the harmonious and melodic. The 3rd movement presents a more lively variant of thefolk tune, showing optimism andhappiness, even though the "halting" character of the rhythm underscores the unpredictable. The title "Reflections", therefore, refers to thoughts we can have about life. To the Conductor:The 2nd movement has an alternativeending which is may be used if the movement is played as an independent lyrical piece in a concert.It is advisable to begin first rehersal with the 2nd movement so that the main theme is known, before beginning on the 1st movement with itsmore semi-tonal parts. Intervals and intonation can provide much of the challenge in this movement.The 3rd movement can be more technically challenging, but there is considerable leeway in the tempo marking! It is important to maintain theenergy and intensity of the music through the whole movement.

An Olympic Celebration - Robert Buckley
An Olympic Celebration is a tribute to the pursuit of excellence and the triumph of the human spirit. This piece was commissioned by The West Vancouver Youth Band for the build up to the 2010 Winter Olympics. The initial "festive fanfare", based on open fifths moving in contrary motion, brings the athletes out into the arena. This leads to the "parade of the athletes" theme. Then comes the establishment of the "heroic theme" in the woodwinds and horns - moving through different sections - until the transition, with an alto saxophone solo and an oboe solo, leading into the "flashback" section. Here we go into the minds of the athletes and the internal and physical struggles thathave brought them to this place. The melody is epic; rich in feeling and full of heart. This moves through various moods until the introduction of the "challenge" theme; a theme stated by the horns and trombones, which passes through the different sections of the band. A restatement of the "flashback" theme, this time triumphant, takes us to a final fanfare of celebration and jubilation.
