Showdown for Band - Gilbert Tinner
Showdown for Band was written as a compulsory exercise for the Third International Light Music Competition at St. Gallen, Switzerland in 1998. The intention of the composer was to write a piece in a light music style that would at the same time challenge the various bands, particularly in the area of rhythm. The work is divided into four parts: Opening, Ballad, Finale and Ending. Using melodies that are easy on the ear and varied instrumentation, many facets of the entire band are displayed. The solo in the middle part can be played by either soprano or alto saxophone, or even by a flugel horn. The impressive composition contains many musical elements, which makes the work anespecially suitable piece with which to open a light classical concert

Sverige pa Vakt (Sweden on Guard) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Widqvist, Viktor - Blixt, Niclas
Sweden On Guard is part of Widkvist's earliest march production. It was composed around 1914 when he served in the engineering troops. It is worth noting that the march from the beginning was probably intended for a small sized brass band and was later rearranged for a full military band by the composer. When I searched in the Swedish War Archives many years ago, looking for more or less forgotten marches, this work, among others, appeared. I immediately became attached to the young Widkvist's catchy melodies and clear harmonic tonal language that express faith in the future and optimism.Sweden On Guard has never been published in print before, and the work of modernizing the setting without resorting to the elegance and resilience of the original has been a challenge.- Niclas BlixtDuration: 2.30

Beating Beats (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
Beating Beats rhythmically is a rather special piece: more conventional metres are manipulated in such a way that the listener (without score) may be confused and even misled at various points! The 'regular four beat accents in a 4/4 measure for example are often not adhered to, giving the impression of a different metre altogether. However, at the same time it may be that some instruments do follow this "normal" 4/4 metre, thus confusing everyone - performers and listeners alike! On one hand, it is a "simple" piece with very playable and melodic themes, but their mysterious rhythmic makes it not only sound more complicated, but also makes for a greater challenge for both players and the conductor! As is mostly the case with Jan Van der Roost's works, the orchestration is both colourful and contrasting, with every section of the modern wind orchestra used equally. All in all, it's a work full of surprises with some unexpected harmonies and special melodic lines but above all, with metrical and rhythmical sure to catch you unawares! Duration: 7.00

Fugue in C Minor (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Bach, Johann Sebastian - Huckeby, Ed
This classic Bach fugue is ideal for bands of all sizes and skills, but especially adapted for those with limited instrumentation desiring to challenge their developing musicians. It is also appropriate for very small ensembles, having been carefully crafted by the arranger to work well with as few as five performers. The required independence of parts provides opportunities for developing technical and musical skills while also presenting the option for performance of a masterwork from the Baroque era. The final product will be well worth the effort in developing and enhancing the overall musicianship of your performers. Great music!Duration: 2.00

Fields of Deliberation was written by composer Kevin Houben for the 'Limburgs Fanfare Orkest'. The occasion was the concert cycle that appropriately commemorated the end of the Second World War. From the very first beginning till the end, speed, energy and 'drive' characterise this powerful composition. A magnificent lyrical melody is the common thread throughout the piece, without the rapid movement losing pace or intensity. Majestic, grand moments and energetic passages alternate culminating in an impressive highlight. Adagio (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Brahms, Johannes - Houben, Kevin
Johannes Brahms can be considered to be one of the top composers of the nineteenth century chamber music. He was a giant in this field and an eminent successor of Beethoven and Haydn. A masterpiece from his chamber music oeuvre is the trio in Eb opus 40 for piano, violin and natural French horn. In 1865, the year of his Horn trio, Brahms's mother Christiane died. It's well known that he fostered deep feelings for her. The slow part of the Horn trio with the tempo indication Adagio Mesto (sad) can be considered as a lamentation for his mother. The first performance of the piece took place in Zurich on 28th November 1865 and it was published a year later in November 1866. In this version for Wind Band Kevin Houben stays as true as possible to the original. The result is a deep and dark orchestration of the wonderful Adagio Mesto. A challenge for any orchestra and extremely suitable as concert piece. Duration: 6.00
