Counterdances From The Lowlands - Paul Voet

We start our trip in Wallony, the French speaking part of Belgium where folk music is having a big revival nowadays. A solo cornet invites us with a classic opening as a little promenade to the dance, always accompanied by a tenor drum. Some instruments join but the cornet ends up alone. When the euphoniums present their more up tempo 'quasi Celtic jig' all groups dance together towards the end. Now and then syncopated counterrhytms occur in accompanying parts. The 1st theme is from the manuscript of Franois-Joseph Jamin (early 19th century).

Far Eastern Dream - Paul Voet

The longest trip we make is to the Far East. Japan, China, Tibet,... all countries with an enormous cultural background and history. Percussion is very important here to give a rich dimension to this Japanese 'Black Bamboo' theme. Tam-tam, Chinese cymbals, Tibetan gong and a kododrum (if not possible, large floor tom) together with marimba and glockenspiel are used all the time in a carefulway. A solo cornet presents the main theme that is answered by the whole lower brass section. Whilethis theme develops now and then the sounds of the impressive 'dung' is heard. (dung is the Tibetan very large trumpet-like instrument with loud and very deep sounds) In a quicker tempo Eb bass, euphonium and solo cornet start with the theme and even the counter theme. The whole group joins the party but everything ends very silently with mute.

    Aspectes A - J. Alamá-Gil

Jos Alam Gil became musical director of the Banda del Centre Artistic Musical de Btera in 1979 and has won many awards with this fine symphonic band. His two part concert piece for symphonic band 'Aspectes' was very successful at the 1998 international contest 'Certamen' at Valencia. The first part 'Antigua danza de palas y planchas' (old dance with sticks and plates) starts with an introductory adagio followed by a lively allegretto interrupted by another quiet adagio. The second part 'La Romeria' (the pilgrimage ) starts with a dynamic allegro vivo followed by a lyrical andante introduced by bell ringing. The driving allegro vivo starts again when the pilgrims start their journey back home. The orchestration is strikingly refined. This is a very beautiful melodic concert piece for symphonic band.

    Festival Signation - Michael Geisler

Festival Signation is an opening piece, suitable for the beginning of a concert, or start of a second half. It begins with a majestic fanfare with powerful chords in the brass, and light motives in the winds. (The fanfare can also be played separately!!) It is followed by an andante espressivo with a melody in the euphonium and 1st horn. After a trumpet solo, the theme is played by the whole orchestra, with support from the percussion. The piece ends with the same opening fanfare.

Sound Trip - Steven L. Rosenhaus

This is an easy song for your beginning band and a great tool for teacher cut-time. Start out conducting in four, then without saying a word, conduct in two when the students have the song down. Once they play it, they will be able to feel the cut time rather than trying to explain it first. 1st trumpet's highest note is C. Clarinets do not cross the break.
