The controversial musical and film Jesus Christ Superstar (1971) was followed by Evita (1976), Cats (1981), Song and Dance (1982), a combination of Variations and Tell me on a Sunday, Starlight Express (1984) and Requiem (1985). His Phantom of the Opera premiered in 1986 starring Sarah Brightman (Lloyd Webber's former wife) and Michael Crawford. The musical won both the Laurence Olivier Award and the Evening Standard Drama Award for Best Musical of 1986.

This arrangement combines the well-known Norwegian folksong "Nringen" with a Springdans. Nringen is a tune associated with traditional wedding celebrations (especially on the morning of the second day of celebration). The song exists in both vocal (stev) and instrumental (gangar) versions. A springdans is a dance in triple meter, usually with an energetic tempo. The traditional triplet ornaments have been removed from this springdans to make it accesible for young wind players.

An Irish Tale
Based on the folk song While History's Muse (subtitled Air: Paddy Whack), this delightful arrangement in 3/4 has all the characteristics of a lighthearted Irish dance. A tambourine and clarinet drone set the stage for the flute melody that is eventually passed throughout the ensemble. Originally written for piano by Dmitri Kabalevsky, here is a marvelous collection of settings for band in contrasting styles. Dance is written in a moderate tempo and features a trumpet melody and active percussion writing. A Little Song is in a slower cantabile style, with haunting harmonies and lovely melodic lines. Finally, The Horseman is up-tempo and rhythmic, with a definite Russian flavor. Quality music for young players!
