Buffalo Dances (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Smith, Robert W.

The lake region around Buffalo, Minnesota, is one of great geographic beauty and historic significance. Originally part of the region known as the Big Woods, the area was covered with hardwoods that were so thick in their overlapping branches, it was difficult to see the road ahead or sky above. The white elm trees grew to six feet in diameter and up to majestic heights of over one hundred feet. The Dakota People lived and prospered in this area between the lakes for 300 years. Buffalo was a favourite hunting and fishing ground for the Dakotas until the arrival of the first European fur traders and settlers. The richness of the natural resources served as a catalyst for modern development, which led to the very progressive region that continues to grow to this day.Buffalo Dances honours the natural beauty, Native-American heritage and the modern prosperity of Buffalo. Beginning with a majestic fanfare, the piece continues with flowing, Native-American inspired melodies over driving rhythmic figures. The centre of the piece is comprised of a simple original hymn song that reflects on the natural beauty of the region. Accompanied by the sounds of Native-American dance, the intensity returns. If one listens carefully the sound of snorting buffalo can be heard amid the festive atmosphere before the return of the concluding fanfare.

Klezmania (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

Klezmer was originally the name given to the music of the Yiddish speaking Jews in Eastern Europe. The klezmer musicians played dance music, mainly at weddings. Historically string instruments such as the violin were predominantly used, but later (after ca. 1900) other instruments and in particular the clarinet were added as melodic instruments. In klezmer music in addition to Balkan influences oriental and gipsy influences can also be found. Jacob de Haan composed Klezmania in this style, based on the well-known Hebrew song Hava Nagila.Duration: 2:50

La Fiesta Mexicana (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Reed, Owen

Following a year of studying Mexican folk music, Reed created this work which is subtitled A Mexican Folk Song Symphony for Concert Band. Set in three contrasting movements, the entire work musically portrays a religious festival. The variety of textures is evident from the beginning of the first movement entitled "Prelude and Aztec Dance." The second movement, "Mass," is more sombre and reflective. "Carnival," the last movement, is joyous and invigorating.Duration: 22.00

Freedoms Sword (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fraser, Bruce

This work was originally commissioned by Nigel Boddice for the West Lothian Schools Brass Band to play at the European Youth Brass Band Championships in 1997 entitled Devolution to celebrate the setting up of the new Scottish Parliament. It appears in this revised version for Concert Band with the title Freedom's Sword. The opening section recalls days gone by when the Scots and English fought many a battle. The themes are derived from the well-known haunting song Ca' the yowes. The horn calls and off-stage percussion sound of a distant battle and it gradually comes closer. The centre section creates a mood of reconciliation with a dreamy Alto Saxophone solo. The last section now looks ahead with optimism and various bright dance themes appear based onTraditional Scottish reel tunes, one of which is a two-part vocal scat section The piece then heads for its conclusion including a full statement of the main theme.
