Suite in Minor Mode - Dmitri Kabalevsky
Originally written for piano by Dmitri Kabalevsky, here is a marvelous collection of settings for band in contrasting styles. Dance is written in a moderate tempo and features a trumpet melody and active percussion writing. A Little Song is in a slower cantabile style, with haunting harmonies and lovely melodic lines. Finally, The Horseman is up-tempo and rhythmic, with a definite Russian flavor. Quality music for young players!

Peat Fire Flame - Travis J. Weller
This piece is based on a Scottish folk song thought to have originated in the Hebrides. Common people in Scotland and Ireland would burn dried peat from the bogs for their hearth fires and gather around to tell tales and dance. The music tells in part of a journey, beginning with a somber and somewhat melancholy melody. It soon takes on a more upbeat feel as the tempo picks up and the mood becomes more uplifting and lively. It presses on to a spirited and bright ending.

An Irish Tale
Based on the folk song While History's Muse (subtitled Air: Paddy Whack), this delightful arrangement in 3/4 has all the characteristics of a lighthearted Irish dance. A tambourine and clarinet drone set the stage for the flute melody that is eventually passed throughout the ensemble. A key change to E= builds until the piece returns to the lighthearted style of the opening one last time. Great writing for young bands! (1:55)

Then things heat up again until the wee hours of the morning...
