Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) originally wrote his Concertino in Eb, Op. 26 in 1811 for famed German clarinetist Heinrich Baermann and it is typical of the florid, early romantic period style of Weber's instrumental concertos. The piece has become well-known to American performers because of this celebrated band transcription by Mayhew Lake. Written within the technical abilities of younger, gifted players, Concertino will be a fine way to demonstrate the clarinetist's potential for brilliant display and heartfelt lyricism. This reissue of the famous transcription includes a corrected and edited version of the Clarinet solo part by Denise Schmidt.

Lullaby from Four Watercolours - Tor Aulin
Few composers have had such an impact on Swedish music life as Tor Aulin (1866 1914). He studied violin and music theory in Stockholm 1877 83, and in Berlin 1884 86. In 1887 he founded the Aulin Quartet, which for more than 20 years played animportant role in broadening Swedish interest in chamber music. The quartet was often on tour with the composer Wilhelm Stenhammar at the piano.1889 1902 Aulin was the leader of the orchestra at the Royal Opera in Stockholm.At Aulinsinstigation the Concert Association in Stockholm (later The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) was founded in 1902, and he was its conductor until 1909. From then on he was the conductor of the Gothenburg ConcertAssociation (nowadays The GothenburgSymphony Orchestra).Besides being a first class violinist, Tor Aulin was also an accomplished pianist, and Edvard Grieg was deeply impressed by Aulin's rendering of his piano concerto.Aulins list of works is dominated by his musicfor violin. He wrote three violin concertos, the third of which still has a place in the repertoire.Four Aquarelles for violin and piano from 1899 is his most beloved composition. In 1996 Jerker Johansson arranged this work for soloinstruments, one for each of the four movements, and concert band. The solo instruments being clarinet, trumpet, flute and alto saxophone.

Perform the alto saxophone theme and solis for each section very passionately!III. HoedownHere is the scene of the rodeo and a free-spirited western swing feel. The introductory clarinet solo can be done ad libitum. Maintain the mood by swinging slightly throughout. Present this movement playfully!IV. Spirituals (Bon-Odori-Uta)This is a requiem on the Bon-Okuri ceremony guiding ancestors back to the spiritual world. The initial piccolo motif repeats a chant in the rhythm of bon odori (a bon dance) and develops as a variation on Owara-bushi, a beautiful folk song from Toyama prefecture. The traditional bon odori have evolved into summer festival entertainment.V. Belly DanceThe belly dance is typically Arabic, its music performed by strings and drums.All should play with passion and flamboyance and a sense of bacchanalia and abandon. This arrangement was made after hearing Astor Piazzolla's 1986 recording of his own work written in 1965.The original instrumentation of bandoneon, violin and string bass is here arranged for three wind soloists with Concert Band.The Soprano Sax is the main soloist (filling the bandoneon role), while the trombone and clarinet shares the violin part as a kind of flirting undertone to the sopranosax.It's not possible to make a 100% correct notation of the solo parts, so it's recommended to listen to the record album "Zero Hour" from 1986 to get the best impression of the work.Enjoy "Milonga Del Angel" and imagine a small, dark caf in Buenos Aires!
