This arrangement of Randall Thompson's unaccompanied choral piece, The Best of Rooms, was transcribed by Barbara Lambrecht. As a student, Barbara fell in love with Thompson's music after hearing the Texas All State Choir sing his Testament of Freedom. Years later, as a school band director, she joined her church choir and "discovered" The Best of Rooms. Charmed not only by the music but also the text, she arranged this gem for wind band so that a new generation of musicians, in this case instrumentalists, could experience the genius of Randall Thompson. Two wind band versions are available: Version A opens with clarinet choir and oboe solo, while Version B opens with horn quartet. A brief history: Pentecost Monday was a special day for schools in Yorkshire (England). There were a variety of activities. The pupils of Sabine Baring-Gould would meet with the children of a nearby village. It seemed like a good idea that during the walk would be sung. But she could not find a suitable song and decided to write one by herself. "Onward Christian Soldiers" was the result. It soon became very popular, though she herself was not entirely satisfied with the rhyme scheme. The melody used (St. Gertrude) was by the famous English composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan. Back to now: Gawan Roberts, has given the hymn a proper update. He gave the still popularsong a solid rock beat and added daring harmonies. So it's popular, for current generations, again for years. Onward!

The composer of some famous operas such as 'La Sonnambula' and 'The Puritans', Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) was largely self-taught. Although he wrote eleven operas, only 'Norma' remained popular, not in the least because of its splendid lyrical arias such as Casta Diva (Chaste Goddess) and Mira, O Norma (Hear me, Norma) familiar to all music lovers. The opera 'Norma' is written to a libretto by Felice Romani, based on a French melodrama by Alexandre Soumet and Louis Belmontet dealing with a story of Druids during the Roman rule. The story is neither accurate historically nor convincing dramatically, but the score is full of brilliant melodies of a type calculated to exhibit a singer's virtuosity to the utmost. The Gods order the priestess and fortune-teller Norma to give the signal of revolt against the Romans in Gaul, but she postpones this because of her relationship with the Roman proconsul Pollione with whom she secretly had two children. In the meantime, Pollione has fallen in love with the young priestess Adalgisa and Norma wants to take revenge. Finally both Norma and Pollione die on the pyre. This tragical opera in two acts was first performed at the Scala of Milan on 26 December 1831.

It was premiered by the Le Havre Municipal Symphonic Band, conducted by Claude Decugis.ARACHNE is a mythological character, who was an expert in weaving. The nymphs, daughters of Zeus, pay her a visit and Arachne boasts that she could even win from the goddess Athena at a weaving contest. Disguised as an old woman, Athena, also pays a visit to Arachne, who maintains the challenge. After a severe warning, Athene takes off her disguise and accepts the challenge.They both set to work quite zealously and the resulting tapestries are both of a rare splendour. But in her work Arachne lacked respect for the gods and Athene rages. She condemns Arachne to continue to weave forever as ... a spider.

This overture introducing Fibich's opera 'Sarka', was composed between 1896 and 1897 and is based on a famous Bohemian legend. Several Czech composers, such as Bedrich Smetana and Leos Janacek, have used this popular national story in opera's and symphonic poems. The relevant legend deals with Vlasta, the courageous Amazone Queen who has a quarrel with the Bohemian knights. After several battles she thinks of a cunning to conquer the knights. She leaves her ally, the beautiful Sarka, tied up to a tree in the middle of the forest. The knight Ctirad finds her, frees her and takes her back to his camp. In the evening he organizes a kind of victory celebration with his friends. At night, while the knights sleep it off, Sarka calls the Amazones. The latter have no difficulties to conquer the sleeping knights. Fibich does not keep strictly to the original legend and made quite some changes, especially at the end of the story.
