Midnight Christmas Eve (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - O'Neill & Olivia - Megaw & Phillips

Imagine the quiet, the anticipation, the tree, and all the lights as Christmas Eve becomes Christmas and you will have the feel of this beautiful rock ballad. As seen in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra stage show, The Christmas Attic, this lyric piece will add depth to any holiday or winter concert. A suitable arrangement for high school bands, the optional electric bass, electric violin, and electric guitar parts provide the perfect chance to feature electric instruments and more advanced players. If you haven't seen TSO, check it out online and then share this one with your students. Perhaps include a field trip to see the band live with lights and effects. Duration: 4.00

Golden Lullaby (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

This lyrical little piece started life as a song on the subject of gold but I wanted to see if it would stand alone as an instrumental piece. The gentle lilt of the melody suggests a lullaby although the texture of the piece builds in an un-lullaby-like fashion towards the end. There is a little 'white-note' dissonance but it is basically traditional in its language. Duration: 3.40

Goodnight Moon (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Whitacre, Eric - Markowski, Michael

"Over the past few years I must have read Goodnight Moon to my son a thousand times - maybe more. Somewhere around reading number 500, I began hearing little musical fragments as I read, and over time those fragments began to blossom into a simple, sweet lullaby. I knew it was a long shot, but I asked my manager, Claire Long, to contact HarperCollins and see if they would allow the text to be set to music. To my surprise and delight they agreed - the first time they had ever allowed Goodnight Moon to be used in such a way. I composed the piece relatively quickly, originally setting the text for harp, string orchestra, and my son's mother, soprano Hila Plitmann. I later arranged Goodnight Moon for SATB choir and piano. More recently, my dear friend Verena M?senbichler-Bryant arranged the piece for wind ensemble and soloist. The melody of Goodnight Moon will forever make me think of those quiet nights, reading my son to sleep." -Eric Whitacre

Goodnight Moon (Vocal Solo (Soprano) with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Brown & Whitacre - Mosenbichler-Bryant, Verena

Note from the Composer: "Over the past few years I must have read Goodnight Moon to my son a thousand times - maybe more. Takayama Impressions (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

This piece was written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Takayama Wind Orchestra, who also commissioned it. The historic city of Takayama draws numerous visitors from home and abroad, not just to see its well-preserved old houses and buildings but also because every year several historic processions take place, with beautiful floats. When these ride through the city, age-old melodies are heard played on wooden flutes, accompanied by muted drums. This image is evoked at the beginning of the work, followed by an archaic sounding melody in a typically Japanese pentatonic sequence, that develops throughout. In this challenging piece Eastern and Western influences alternate, creating a sensational and overwhelming musical effect! Duration: 9.45

Cry of the Mountain (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lorriman, Howard

This work is dedicated to Manfred Obrecht, conductor and musical editor. Manfred asked the composer to write a piece that captures the changing colours and mood of a mountain when viewed from a relatively close distance. The work is in four sections:Awakening - early morning and the mountain is covered in cloud, eventually the sun bursts through and reveals the mountain in all its glory.Snow, Ice and Glaciers - between the rocky out-crops ther are layers of snow; slippery ice patches and icicles adorn the overhangs. In the larger crevices and valleys glaciers are formed.Vistas and Distant Peaks - when viewed from other high points one can see the mountain in full outline against the vast landscape.Avalanche - despite its beauty, a mountain can be a dangerous place and the accumulated snow may not be stable, it can easily tumble out of control. The slight twist of major tonalities at the very end reflects the way a sudden change in light can alter the whole perspective.
