    Grandmother Song

Grandmother Song is an introduction to the Mohican tradition of sung syllables, or what Native Americans call vocables. Combining them with traditional wood flute songs, composer Brent Michael Davids offers a fresh look at the sound of Native American songs. Band instruments are performed less as musical instruments and more as talking sticks, singing reeds, rustling winds and shooting thunder. Through this beautiful ballad, students are given the materials to understand how Native Americans celebrate the world around them through the blending of words and song. (Includes score and parts.) BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Learn more on YouTube. Killing Me Softly with His Song - C. Fox

The tender ballad Killing Me Softly with His Song was written by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel in 1971, for de American singer Lori Lieberman. She was very impressed with a performance by the then still unknown Don McLean in the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The feelings described in the lyrics are indeed those of Lieberman, but the one who - two years later - made the song world-famous was Roberta Flack. Her version won as many as three Grammy Awards. Since then, Killing Me Softly has been performed by numerous artists, including Herb Alpert, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Anne Murray, Luther Vandross, and the Fugees.

Song for Sakiko - Bert Appermont

Bert Appermont composed Song for Sakiko during a stay in the cosmopolitan metropolis of Tokyo. "Sakiko" roughly translated means "flower child" and is associated with a dreamy, poetic atmosphere. Appermont used theseassociations as a starting point while composing. Song for Sakiko starts with a very lyrical theme based on a minor third that forms the basis for the entire work. A second theme builds up to the grand finale, which repeats the theme, but in amajor key and the music slowly fades away, like ripples on a pond, as both themes can be heard dissipating into nothingness.
