Deriving its subtitle from a Civil War poem by Walt Whitman, this original tone poem by Richard Meyer is full of emotion and energy. The work is divided into four sections entitled Home, Recruitment, Departure, and Into Battle. It begins with a recurring theme introduced by solo trumpet that represents a young man. This segues into the next theme, which features George Roots's stirring Battle Cry of Freedom. Flutes and drums are widely used to convey a strong feeling of patriotism. At the midway point a gentle susurration of bell-sounds, descant recorders and tin whistles appear over sustained brass. There is a brief downwards shift of a third, followed by an elated return to the home key before the evanescent tinkling ushers the piece to its close. This piece was composed in the summer of 2000, on commission of the Whightull Wind Ensemble. Seaside Road is a march in two-four time. The work begins with a tempestuous sound, followed by a light passage. Featuring, amongst others, your Bass Clarinet and Euphonium soloists in the trio section, the work builds towards an agile tutti before concluding with a powerful closing section. A must for all your summer season concerts.

A Spanish Promenade. This lively little piece is in a continuous with no changes of metre. Though the overall marking is 'steady', it is based on a cheerful Spanish dance with a distinctly carnival mood which provides plenty of rhythmic interest and a few other delights along the way; the middle section is only slightly more reflective. The original title was 'Spanish Promenade', but then it seemed that before setting off in this time signature you would probably need 'Juan' - or even two - for the road. AB grade 2.5Duration: 02:30
