Arranger Takashi Hoshide says, "I have selected beautiful melodies from the soundtrack of 'Princess Mononoke' (1997, directed by Hayao Miyazaki) and arranged them into a medley. What can be said about these songs as a whole is that they combine a grand continental scale with the delicacy that reflects Japanese emotions. Since there are no upbeat songs in this selection, I had to work hard on the arrangement, but this allowed for creating contrasts and transitions between each scene in the performance. 'Ashitaka Sekki (English title: The Legend of Ashitaka)' - 'Sekki' means a story that is not recorded but passed down orally. In this anime, this can be considered a sub-main theme. The song starts with a feeling that the story is about to begin and, once the theme kicks in, aim for a grand performance to convey its scale. 'Encounter' - This is the music that plays during the scene where the protagonist Ashitaka meets San. Interestingly, the motif of the main theme 'Princess Mononoke' is used in this melody. Here, let's pursue the shifts in the timbre of individual phrases, creating a beautiful and aesthetic soundscape. 'Princess Mononoke' - This is the main title of the anime. The melody line is carried by horns and trumpets."

Princess Mononoke Fantasy Scenes - Joe Hisaishi
Princess Mononoke (1997) is recognized for its outstanding soundtrack. The CD "Princess Mononoke" recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra after the film's release is also widely known. The CD arrangement follows the soundtrack and adds detailed scenes from the film with some development.Consider this arrangement a sequel to my previous "Selections from Princess Mononoke" as I have utilized additional songs from the soundtrack.By commission request from Mr. Shindo, director of the Girls Junior & Senior High School band club of Seitoku University, I arranged "San and Ashitaka in the Forest of the Deer" and "World of the Dead." The original features piano solo, which is very appealing. I made it optional which can be played by other instruments if needed. The Suite of Cotswold Folkdances (not to be confused with Cotswold Dances) was commissioned by the Stroud Festival to celebrate HRH, the Princess Anne and her family taking up residence in the Cotswolds, near Stroud. The suite of dances is based on traditional Morris tunes prevalent in the Cotswolds at the turn of the century. Although the tunes themselves are left largely untouched, their implied harmonies and moods are treated more freely to create a balanced work for the concert hall. Numbers 2, 3, and 4 may recall more familiar variants since it is in the nature of folksong/dance for there to be more than one version when examples were transmitted, not always accurately, by word of mouth or note of pipe.

Maurice Ravel was only 24 when his piano solo Pavane Pour une Infante Defunte, which translated means Pavane for a dead princess, became the rage of the drawing rooms and salons of Paris in 1899, but the work already held the unmistakable stamp of his style. Ravel orchestrated the work in 1910. Jerry Brubaker presents this lovely work in a Concert band setting with all of the lush melodies and harmonies of the original work but with simplified ranges and a comfortable key.
