    Popov's Parade - Duncan Stubbs

Combining references to 20th-century Russian music with slapstick humour, 'Popov's Parade' is a humble tribute to a great international artist, Oleg Popov, one of the world's best-known clowns. The quote from Schubert's March Militaire parodies Stravinsky's use of this same fragment in his own Circus Polka. Suitable for intermediate level (Grade 3/4) Symphonic Wind Band.

    Parade Militaire - Jules Massenet

As a gifted young composer, Jules Massenet (1842-1912) wrote several operas that were never produced or printed; but at the age of 25, he enjoyed his first opera production in Paris. Following that success he became a popular and successful part of the Paris music scene. In 1878, he was appointed professor of advanced composition at the conservatory, and it was while he held this position that he composed his Parade Militaire for orchestra. Parade of the Clockwork Soldiers - Philip Sparke

This piece was inspired by the composer watching his young son, Benny, playing 'soldiers' with his collection of teddy bears - how appropriate! But it made him think of the many character pieces which take the form of a 'toy march', the most notable examples being by Haydn, Tchaikovsky and Leon Jessel. Parade of the Clockwork Soldiers is in the form of a 'patrol' (starting and ending quietly with a louder middle) and aims to represent a band marching past the listener. In fact, where the hall layout permits it, it could be possible to add a little choreography to the piece, starting and ending with only a few instruments on stage.
