Pageant is the classic composition from well-known composer Vincent Persichetti. Premiered in 1953, Pageant is a symphonic overture which features a slow, homophonic section followed by a lively ""Parade"" section. It has long been a staple in the repertoire of high school bands everywhere. This recording of this timeless piece is to remind experienced band directors of this wonderful work and introduce it to those unfamiliar.

Ascendance - Robert Thurston
A dynamic concert overture that derives most of its force and material from the striking fanfare motive announced in the opening measure by horns and trumpets (concert Eb, Bb, Ab, Db). The bold opening in compound time is followed by a suave and flowing Adagio in 4/4 meter that makes a lovely tune out of a variant of the opening motive. At measure 103, with a marimba solo, the Allegro style and compound meter return for a rousing and invigorating climax. Wedding Dances - Daron Aric Hagen
A concert version of the dance music from the second act of the sensational opera for voices and wind ensemble by Daron Aric Hagen (see Overture above), this varied and colorful piece will be a brilliant addition to the program of a Grade for band. The French composer Daniel Franois Esprit Auber (1782-1871) witnessed many important developments in the history of music ? from Luigi Cherubini to Richard Wagner. His extensive output consisted mainly of operas, but unfortunately today only two of these are still well known, including the comic opera Fra Diavolo. The story concerns Fra Diavolo, a famous Italian bandit and soldier from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and is one of crime, lust and treachery. The overture has a classical structure and is filled with striking themes and motifs and has a particularly unusual introduction (for the time) with the snare drum taking the leading role!

The Bartered Bride (Czech: Prodan nev??sta, The Sold Fiance) is the second opera, a comedy in three acts, by Bedich Smetana. The Czech libretto was written by Karel Sabina, who had also written the libretto for Brandenburgers in Bohemia. Composed in 1863 1866, the work was originally envisioned as an operetta, a light opera with spoken dialogue in place of sung recitatives. It was first performed in this form in 1866 in Prague. The definitive version of the work, now an opera buffa, was finished in 1870 and was performed the same year. The opera's overture and three dances are part of the orchestral repertoire.

Manfred Schneider (1953), is since 1972 a member of the German Military Band Heeresmusikkorps 300) based at Koblenz. After his overture 'Upside Down' and the rhythmical study 'Rock and Go' Molenaar Edition now publishes this lyrical 'Song of Freedom'. A nice slow tune turns into a very rhythmical intermezzo, but soon returns to its original slow but compelling character. You can hardly refrain from joining in.
