£121.00Prelude to Parsifal - Richard Wagner
Parsifal, written in 1882, was the final opera by composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883). The prelude is a miniature masterpiece consisting of only 116 measures. The form of the prelude is similar to that of the classical three-movement overture and consists of four musical motives: the mystical realm of the Holy Grail; the Grail itself in the Dresden Amen; Faith, represented by the brass chorale; and the Agony of Amfortas. This transcription by John R. Bourgeois faithfully adheres to Wagners intent both in key relationships and orchestration.

The number 2000 - to begin with - stands for the magic year, that is drawing near so swiftly. Another fact represented by this number is that this overture makes the two thousandth work published by MOLENAARS MUZIEKCENTRALE since its foundation in 1933. 'Ouverture 2000' was written to commemorate this occasion and it is dedicated to the Molenaar family.The music displays a pithy, festive and dynamic character.The opening fanfare is succeeded by a fast and virtuoso movement in which a 'pull-out of all stops' of the various windband registers can be heard.

£140.80Piece Heroique - César Franck
Csar Franck (1822-1890) was born in Liege, Belgium, and his great musical talent was discovered when he was still a small boy. When he was 12 years old, his family moved to Paris. In the French capital he was active as a teacher, an organist and a conductor. In 1858 he was appointed organist at the Sainte Clotilde Church in Paris; that church boasted brand new Cavaill-Coll organ. For this instrument Franck wrote Six pices pour grand orgue (Six pieces for grand organ) in 1862 and in 1878 Trois pices pour grand orgue (Three pieces for grand organ), one of those pieces being Pice Hroque . This energetic and lively composition starts with the typical rhythm of a traditional French overture. The central choral is in a major key, but then major and minor keys alternate and the work ends with a powerful fortissimo.

£116.40Anacreon Ouverture - Luigi Cherubini
Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842) was one of the leading figures in the musical world of the early nineteenth century, being active as well in Paris, London and Vienna as in his home country Italy. He became the first inspector of the Paris Conservatory of Music where he taught composition from 1816 onwards and was director from 1821 to 1841. Besides his famous 'Requiem in C minor' he wrote some thirty operas, fallen into oblivion except for the overtures, and also several marches for wind band. 'Anacreon' is a ballet-opera in one act written and first performed in 1803. The composition is rather representative for Cherubini's style and boasts several pleasant melodies fitting in a distinct structure. The overture is written in a simple classical style. The introducing largo leads to the central allegro and then the themes are developed in a fascinating way.

This beautiful overture by the Portuguese composer Afonso Alvares starts with a broad andante that soon turns into a partly rhythmical partly singing allegro evoking the world of thrilling adventures in grandiose settings. The atmosphere calms down and becomes more lyrical in the spinned out adagio that describes inner feelings and yet refers from time to time to the suggested adventures. Repetition of several themes leads to an impressive climax.

The opera or 'farsa comica' in one act 'La Scala di Seta' (The Silken Ladder) by Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) was first performed at the 'San Mois' theatre in Venice on 9 May 1812. It is the story of the beautiful Giulia whose guardian wants her to marry a rich young man. However, Giulia is already married to a young man who climbs every night into her room by means of a silken ladder. In the splendid overture of this opera Rossini gave an important part to the wind ensemble. This classic of the early 19th century repertoire has been most skilfully and enthusiastically arranged for wind band by Lorenzo della Fonte.
