£134.99Le Nozze di Figaro - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
In 1786, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his wonderful opera Le Nozzi di Figaro. In the opera Count Almaviva tries to seduce the fiance of Figaro, his valet. Eventually, through four acts full of complicated intrigue, he is outwitted. In his music, Mozart, at times in a humorous way, reflects the numerous social and erotic intrigues with both empathy and insight. The brilliant overture is just as vivacious and witty as the opera itself. Mozart delightfully anticipates the passion and playful love that is to come. The skillful transcription for concert band by the Japanese composer Tohru Takahashi certainly does justice to this enchanting music.

Love in the Garden - Modest Mussorgsky
The most important work by the Russian composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) is undoubtedly his masterly opera Boris Godunov. A number of years after the composer's death, this opera was re-orchestrated by Rimsky-Korsakov, with his romantic version being quiet different from the original score by Moussorgsky. 'Love in the Garden' is a lovely quiet moment from the opera, a beautiful duet between Marina and Dmitri. Add a little romance to any concert with this attractive arrangement for concert band.

£144.99The Bartered Bride - Bedrich Smetana
The Bartered Bride (Czech: Prodan nev??sta, The Sold Fiance) is the second opera, a comedy in three acts, by Bedich Smetana. The Czech libretto was written by Karel Sabina, who had also written the libretto for Brandenburgers in Bohemia. Composed in 1863 1866, the work was originally envisioned as an operetta, a light opera with spoken dialogue in place of sung recitatives. It was first performed in this form in 1866 in Prague. The definitive version of the work, now an opera buffa, was finished in 1870 and was performed the same year. The opera's overture and three dances are part of the orchestral repertoire.

£33.10Hunyadi Indul - Ferenc Erkel
The first performance of the opera "Hunyadi Lszl" by Ferenc Erkel (1810-1893) at the National Theater in Pest took place in times that foreboded the revolt of 1848. The rise of this stage work to Hungary's national opera and its ensuing immediate great success probably is due to the plot itself and the atmosphere prevailing in the country at that time. The great flute virtuoso and composer Franz Doppler (1821-1883) asked "Erkel to grant permission to write a march on the basis of motifs from this opera for my citizen's guards band, which he explicitly consented to ..." From the days of the revolution against Habsburg until today the "Hunyadi indul" ("March on Motifs of theOpera 'Hunyadi'") has remained to be popular throughout and therefore may rightly be addressed as a Hungarian national march.

£172.50Edgar - Giacomo Puccini
Edgar was Giacomo Puccini's second opera but despite numerous changes and adaptations, it was never able to match the success enjoyed by his first opera Le Villi. Puccini himself was never completely satisfied with the opera either. It was not until the 1970's, after the first release of a recording of the work, that Edgar gained in popularity and recognition. Johan de Meij has created this fabulous concert band arrangement of this much under-performed work.

Finale - Giuseppe Giordani
It has been said, and wisely so, that if you wish to find TRULY dramatic music, look to opera. This is an essentially complete transcription of Act IV of Umberto Giordano's tragic opera ANDREA CHENIER. One night before French poet Andrea Chenier's impending execution, his lover Madeleine comes to the prison at St. Lazare and, wishing to die rather than live without him, through bribery manages to exchange places with a young woman who is, like Chenier, scheduled to mount the scaffold the following day. James Curnow fully utilizes his considerable orchestration skill with this immensely powerful transcription. Well performed, the ending is absolutely awe-inspiring. If yourgroup has the skill to play at this level you definitely MUST explore this significant transcription.

£84.99Cavatina - Charles Gounod
Goethe's Faust has already been set to music by various renowned musicians, such as Berlioz, Busoni and Spohr, and indeed Charles Gounod, who built his eponymous opera around the tale. Gounod's Faust is primarily known for its lovely melodies and its beautifully expressive vocal parts and subtle orchestrations. One of the high points of this opera is doubtless this impressive Cavatina ("Salut, demeure chaste et pure"). Wil van der Beek has arranged the Cavatina with the euphonium as solo instrument.
