JOHN GAY SUITE, A (Novello Symphonic) - Orr, Buxton
Score & Parts. The idea for this suite came from left-over thoughts from a projected version of The Beggar's Opera, which failed to come to fruition. When John Gay assembles the music for The Beggar's Opera in 1727, he used popular tunes of the day and Dr. Pepusch provided orchestral accompaniments. More recently, Frederic Austin and Benjamin Britten have been amongst many composers who have adapted these melodies to their own purposes. Duration: 15 mins. Recorded on QPRM127D Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.4 (Guildhall Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Peter Gane)

L'Amico Fritz Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
When you say Mascagni you immediately think of Cavalleria rusticana. This work brought Mascagni overnight fame after his wife - without him knowing - entered the score in a composition contest and it won first prize. Cavalleria rusticana became an incredible success, overshadowing the premiere of his next opera, L'Amico Fritz. L'Amico Fritz can still be considered a successful opera, with its highlights being the 'Cherry Duet' and this intermezzo, arranged by the Japanese Kimura. 0:04:53

French Chanson - P. Certon
French Chanson, arranged by Steven J. Pyter, is a rousing arrangement of a famous 16th-century choral work. The tuneful Renaissance art song tells a light-hearted story of gossip and rumor, with lyrics roughly translating to "I will tell you!" The story centers around a jealous husband suspicious of his beautiful wife. Like opera, the piece employs dramatic and whimsical characteristics to tell a passionate story. This arrangement alternates between tutti statements and short interludes to feature each instrument family in the band---woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The intensity and playfulness make for a great concert opener! (1:40)
