An arrangement for full band of the well-known Adagio from Oboe Concerto in D minor op. 1, now attributed to Alessandro Marcello (1673-1747). It is a popular work in the oboe repertoire. Written in the early 18th century, it is Marcello?€s best known composition and was transcribed for harpsichord by Bach (BWV 974). In the transcription Bach greatly embellished the melodic line of the Adagio middle movement. The majority of oboe soloists incorporate these embellishments in their performances of the concerto and this arrangement includes most of the Bach melodic shapes.Duration: 4.1

Released as a charity single in aid of The Queen's Commonwealth Trust, this sublime work was composed by Debbie Wiseman OBE and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II after her death in September 2022. This tender and contemplative piece was played many times during the BBC's live coverage of the ceremonies across ten days of national mourning; and the full three-minute piece was played at the end of the Queen's State funeral, following Kirsty Young's emotional final words, and accompanied by a poignant and beautiful montage of images from the events of the day. The piece is now available for wind bands through this arrangement by Andrew Wainwright, with permission kindly granted by Debbie Wiseman. Purcell Variants is based on Purcell's Queen Mary's Funeral Music, which consists of four canzonas, two elegies and an anthem. The first movement begins by sounding some of Purcell's original music in the trombones and horns, underpinned by a timpani roll with the woodwind articulating the beginnings and endings of the phrases. This leads into a cadenza for trumpet and alto saxophone before the movement heads in different directions, leading us to its mysterious end, where the original music is sounded this time in the 'stabs' of the clarinets and alto saxophone. Originally composed for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695, Purcell's original funeral music was used later that same year for Purcell's own funeral - he died aged only 34. The second movement is an elegy, inspired by this story. After an introduction (a disjointed last post), the main melody of the movement is introduced by the solo euphonium, with other solo roles for flute, oboe and alto saxophone. This is then taken over by the trumpets who lead us into the middle section of the movement. This is a quasi funeral march, inspired by the image of Purcell's coffin being taken to its final resting point. The main melody returns in the flute, oboe and alto saxophone, this time more elaborated. The movement ends with a snare drum fading away - perhaps a metaphor. The Finale is a fast and furious movement combining thematic material from the two previous movements with new rhythmical ideas. This takes us through to the final passage - the triumphant return of Purcell's original theme. Duration: 13.00

The through-arch bridge that is visible for miles across the Cheshire Gap is one of two adjacent bridges that cross both the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal. Its formal name is the Silver Jubilee Bridge is more usually known as the Runcorn Bridge. Runcorn Bridge begins with a brief, quiet, introduction featuring an oboe solo. There follows a lively march at the end of which a reflective interlude (or bridge!) based upon the tune that occurs twice in the march leads to a lyrical, almost nocturnal section spotlighting the alto saxophone. A variant of the first interlude leads to a scherzo-like section kicked off by the euphonium with a 'trio' that contains a Latin-inflected version of the oboe melody first heard in the introduction. A third interlude variant heralds a return of the nocturnal melody firstly as a horn solo but subsequently returning to the alto saxophone. Previous melodic materials gradually combine as an extended crescendo leads to a majestic, but short, coda that in a gesture of symmetrical solidarity refers back to the march tune utilised in the earlier interludes. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY GLINKA was written for solo oboe accompanied by wind band. The theme of the Variations is in a fact a folksong melody which is still occasionally heard in Russia. This edition of VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY GLINKA is based on the full score published by the Russian state publishers and a number of editions of the same piece for solo oboe and piano. Adapted for the present day wind band, the corno basso accompaniment has been rescored for bass clarinet reinforced by optional string bass. Saxophones have been added to the instrumentation in tutti sections, along with rehearsal numbers throughout the meticulously edited full score.

Einar Englund (1916-1999) was a major Finnish composer of symphonies, concertos and film music. His first symphony (1946) bears the title "War Symphony", not given by the composer. He preferred to think think of it rather as a euphoric shout of joy at living to survive the hells of war. The first movement Tempo di marcia depicts seemingly never-ending marching through Karelia during the Soviet-Finnish war. Influences from Sibelius and Shostakovich are present.American conductor Robert J. Ambrose's arrangement of Englund's Tempo di Marcia is scored for wind band. The duration is 9 minutes.
