Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY GLINKA was written for solo oboe accompanied by wind band. The theme of the Variations is in a fact a folksong melody which is still occasionally heard in Russia. This edition of VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY GLINKA is based on the full score published by the Russian state publishers and a number of editions of the same piece for solo oboe and piano. Adapted for the present day wind band, the corno basso accompaniment has been rescored for bass clarinet reinforced by optional string bass. Saxophones have been added to the instrumentation in tutti sections, along with rehearsal numbers throughout the meticulously edited full score.

Einar Englund (1916-1999) was a major Finnish composer of symphonies, concertos and film music. His first symphony (1946) bears the title "War Symphony", not given by the composer. He preferred to think think of it rather as a euphoric shout of joy at living to survive the hells of war. The first movement Tempo di marcia depicts seemingly never-ending marching through Karelia during the Soviet-Finnish war. Influences from Sibelius and Shostakovich are present.American conductor Robert J. Ambrose's arrangement of Englund's Tempo di Marcia is scored for wind band. The duration is 9 minutes. Encore! was commissioned by Ishikawa Prefecture Band Association to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2010. The commissioning request was that the piece be fun and appropriate as an encore. I made it simple and enjoyable for everyone.The only thing I added was an appealing introduction so each entering section might feel the importance of their instrument. That's why there is a specified appearance order involving standing. It goes from 1) clarinets, 2) piccolo, flute, horn, oboe and bassoon, 3) percussion, 4) euphonium, tuba and double bass, 5) trombone, 6) saxophone to 7) trumpet. Lastly, all sections stand up together and greet the audience. Technically, it's a medium grade level. There are substitutions for bands lacking oboe, bassoon or double bass.The title was selecting hoping for a fun, grand finale. It also means "more" and "again." My hope is for performers and audience to enjoy music, and for Ishikawa Prefecture Band Association to nourish its band movements and activities. I could not ask for more if people come to love music even more by experiencing this work.(Yo Goto)

Fanfares in Remembrance - Peadar Townsend
Fanfares in Remembrance was commissioned by Nick Jarvis, Principal conductor of the Band of the Royal British Legion, Christchurch, Dorset, UK to be premiered during the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium on May 27th, 2017. The work is a short reflection two World War One bugle calls, 'The General Salute' and 'Retreat' or 'Sunset' as it is also known. The significance and symbolism of bugle calls from this era are well known and they are still used in Barracks across the world. I have used sections of these famous British bugle calls on two trumpets either side of the band playing in two different musical keys. The band then plays an intermittent low drone like chord, again in a different musical key to the two trumpets. In my mind this opening depicts two buglers at dawn at either end of a misty field directly after a brutal slaughter. The two buglers are almost calling out for their missing comrades only to realise they are gone...... The work moves into a haunting oboe melody signifying loss. The oboe is joined by the full band in a tune of strength, solidarity, yet profound sadness. The work concludes with a recap of the opening idea; however, the two buglers are now united in musical key sounding 'The General Salute'. The music ends as the wind blows gently. The memories live on forever......

This work was commissioned for The Berkshire Young Musicians Trust (England), who required a testing piece for the woodwind section of their concert band. The piece opens with a strong unison passage based on the interval of a fifth and develops with a passionate legato. This is followed by the main vivo section of the work based on the earlier 'fifth' figures. A bridge passage leads to a short chorale figure and a rhythmic climax which dissolves into a plaintive solo for oboe over staccato clarinets. Following a recapitulation of the main theme the oboe returns triumphantly before the opening unison passage reappears to provide a stirring coda.

£84.99For Whom the Bell Tolls - Philip Sparke
For Whom the Bells Tolls was commissioned by the Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra, who gave the premiere in their 10th anniversary concert, held in the Artane School of Music, Dublin, on the 31st August 2024.The commission was funded by money raised to provide a piece which commemorated friends and members of the orchestra who had recently passed away. This prompted the choice of title, taken from the famous poem by English writer John Donne (1572 - 1631), which reminds us that the death of anyone affects us all.The work opens with an enigmatic duet between oboe and clarinet. This is taken up by the full band and leads to the work's main theme, a lyrical chorale, which builds to a passionate climax. A central section, introduced by the English horn (cue clarinet), eventually leads back to a triumphal return of the chorale on full band. The mood subsides to introduce an echo of the opening material, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

The Ascent from Darkness, by Rossano Galante, pays homage to the human race that endured the pandemic. He creates a musical landscape that depicts strength, tenacity, and compassion. The main theme, which is broad and lyrical, is stated by horns and winds. As the piece develops, the theme is played by full, chordal brass accompanied by rhythmic woodwind lines. The B section is lightly orchestrated with a solo oboe accompanied by the clarinet section, slowly growing to a tutti statement. The piece recapitulates with bold brass chords. The work ends as it begins, quietly incorporating the first motive. (4:00)
