It seems that Haydn was inspired by a Croatian folksong. It was sung in Burgenland Croatian areas in various versions under the title Atal se jesem (I am standing). Storm Surge is a musical representation of the devastating North Sea storm surge (in Dutch, Watersnoodramp) of 1953. The surge left 2551 dead, 1836 people from the Netherlands alone, together with fatalities in Scotland, England and West Flanders. Storm Surge starts off with calm waters, while we hear the steadily growing sounds of the wind and sea. A specially commissioned poem, written by Martin Westlake, spoken over these sounds, warns of the dangers of ignoring the storm. Slowly, the storm starts to take hold and the sea begins to swell. The violence of the storm then erupts, but before it reaches its climax, the Dutch National Anthem gives a sense of the calm in the eye of the storm. It then returns to the storm surge and depicts the sea breaking through and ravaging the coastline. Eventually the storm surge recedes until a lone trumpet is left quoting broken fragments of the Anthem. The work closes with a calm breeze mournfully revealing the devastation left behind by this natural disaster.

"The Old Fortress of Luxembourg" is a commissioned work by the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture for the overture of the official ceremony of Luxembourg's National Day. The piece is less concerned with history, but rather draws inspiration from the architecture of the ancient fortress of Luxembourg, known as Lucilinburhuc."The fortress, over 1000 years old and also referred to as the "Gibraltar of the North," primarily consists today of the Bock Rock, the crypt, the casemates (an underground defense system consisting of kilometers of tunnels), and the Holy Spirit Citadel. These elements are portrayed through radiant fanfare sounds, rhythmic orchestral movements, patriotic choral melodies, and at times, somber musical depictions.As an optional highlight, a choir, supported by a boys' choir, interprets the newly composed text of the third verse of the Luxembourgish National Anthem, adding an additional touch of patriotic grandeur to this piece.

Three Sisters is a 1970 British drama film starring Alan Bates, Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright, based on the 1900 play by Anton Chekhov. Olivier also directed, with co-director John Sichel; it was the final feature film directed by Olivier. The film was based on a 1967 theatre production that Olivier had directed at the Royal National Theatre. William Walton produced the film music using themes by Tchaikovsky, from the official national anthem of the Russian Empire in 1833 - 1917, God save the Tsar!, (the music of which is also included in several hymnals as 'God, the Omnipotent'), and which he featured in his 1812 Overture, to a charming imitation Swan Lake waltz. The original theme for Three Sisters has reappeared as contemporary stage plays and musicals, which are still active today. This short, descriptive arrangement offers an accessible opportunity for bands to experience tuneful music of the period.
