Benjamin Franklin's love for the art of music was well documented in American history. Robert W. Smith has selected three musical moments in Ben Franklin's life and created this unique composition for the concert band. Beginning with a setting of "My Plain Country Joan." a song composed as an anniversary gift to his wife, Franklin's jovial personality is evident through the timelessness of his music. The second section is based on Franklin's glass armonica. The delicate and ethereal sounds of this beautiful instrument provide a quiet moment of reflection for all. The finale is based on Franklin's "magic squares." an arrangement of numbers in a square where all rows, columns and diagonals add to the same sum. Robert W. Smith extracted the melody based on the numeric sequence in a 3 x 3 magic square. The resulting musical statement and fugue truly shows the close relationship between mathematics and music. An amazing concept, an amazing cross-curricular piece!

The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. ('Harmonia' in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notes form the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction.Duration: 15:30

Then, finally, there is a glimmer of hope, when the water is dammed up and the land partly reclaimed (by conversion into polder land). The town of Dronten, for instance, develops into a place where one day two people meet up and fall in love. This love is reflected in the slow, passionate middle movement. New life in the town is celebrated joyfully: the zest for life clearly shines through this part of the work, followed byoptimism and celebration in the closing bars.

Based on a simple seven tone idea, the work develops from a gentle almost intimate mood towards a life- affirming climax.Robin Hoffmann, born 1984, studied composition and arranging at the Dresden College of Music. Since 2006, he has worked as composer, orchestrator and arranger for international film and concert productions. In 2010, the London Symphony Orchestra recorded his violin concerto at Abbey Road studios. His film music for Hero and A Father's Job won numerous international prizes. He was awarded a gold record in 2022 as arranger for Alex Christensen.
