This work, composed in 1985, wants to shake you up and put a spell on you at the same time. Today, humanity is threatened by many dangers, many of which we are not able to banish. We need help from a higher power. The Chorale "Aus tiefer Not schrei' ich zu dir" (from deep distress I cry to you) illustrates this. This motif appears in diverse variations. But, in his arrogance the wicked man does not believe in the rule of evil demons in the world.With the Gregorian melody in the sequence "Dies irae" (day of wrath) from the requiem mass, the nearing of disaster is announced: without God man goes astray. He falls into ruin.To deepen the poignancy of this composition, Paul Huber cited a dramatic episode from his symphony "The nostraie aetatis angoribus" (from the anxiety of our time).

£116.40Quatre Jours a Paris - Kees Vlak
1) 'Jour de Fte. A quiet sunday atmosphere on the Avenue Foch, a residental area for the well-to-do in Paris. It begins with full-sounding chords, with a wealth of added tones. It seems as if many bells are tolling. Birds are tweeting high in the trees. After all this there is a very simple theme without any tension just like a leisure walk. The movement ends the same way it started.2) 'Jour de Java. The 'Java' is the dance of the Bohemians, the Paris gypsies. It is a very capricious dance, which is represented by at certain moments shrill harmonies and the unexpected changes in tonality of this movement.3) 'Jour de Pluie. A rainy day. Seated behind the windows of a sidewalk caf we observe the reflections on the wet streets. Under a fly-over an accordeon plays a sad melody. Old memories pass through our minds.4) 'Jour de Can-Can. Whenever one hears 'Can-Can' the name of Jacques Offenbach crosses our minds. It is the dance of the Folies Bergres, a festival which never seems to end. All the time new solo-dancers come jumping forward.

£131.30Hymns And Dances II - J. Slothouwer
In 1990 Jochem Slothouwer composed Hymns and Cances II. This work for symphonic band and harp (ad libitum) is based on Hymns and Dances I for piano, mixed choir and percussion. The compostition is based on the contrast between hymnlike melodies and dance music episodes. The work, in five connected parts, seems to look for a reconciliation of both melodic and rythmical elements. The initial theme with the horns and the answer of the band form the base of the first part.The second part, charcterized by a vitorous dance rhythm, is dominated by the percussionn and syncopated motifs with the brass. A melody with the euphoniums almost imperceptibly slips into the ensemble and gradually gets to the foreground. The dance and the hymn reach a real climax interrupted by a short and dark intermezzo (part three). The clear sonority of part four, a fiery tarantella with many small byt virtuoso solos, is a new contras. The final adagio reuses the previously developed ideas of part one and ends in sheer ecstasy.

£90.30European Folk Rhapsody - Andrew Balent
European Folk Rhapsody contains folk melodies from England (Early One Morning), France (Passing through Lorraine), Holland (When Duke Jan came sailing), Switzerland (Vreneli) and Austria (Sleep Little Soul). These settings use many styles and tone colors and feature short solos from several sections of the band. The stirring finale has the English tune 'Cornish May Song' superimposed over the melody from 'America' or 'God Save the Queen'.

£140.80Cinquantieme - Serge Lancen
Cinquantieme, the fiftieth composition for symphonic band by Serge Lancen, was composed in the fall of 1993. It is written in an overture form and built on four distinct themes. First there is a merry and dynamic March, followed by a Waltz of the same character; then comes a small melody and finally the March turns up again, but this time it ends with a triumphant theme. The overture is dedicated to Alain Thiery and his Symphonic Band of Pont-Ste-Marie/La-vau/Creney. It was premiered during the gala concert closing the 120th anniversary celebrations of that band. The number in the title 'Cinquantieme' (Fiftieth), indicates the richness of Lancen's wind band repertoire. Fascinated by the symphonic band's extremely rich range of tone colours, Lancen has devoted all his talent and passion to it. For this type of orchestra he has written symphonies, rhapsodies, several concertos and even religious compositions with choirs and soloists.

(Rhapsody from Friesland)Friesland (Frysln in the Frisian language) does not only have its own language but it also boasts a very rich own culture with many folk songs sometimes dating from many centuries. This rhapsody is based on a number of those songs and from a stylistic viewpoint it is related to the famous Rhapsody from the Low Countries by the same composer.A solemn introduction is followed by a merry dancing song (De Boalserter merke) and a second, rather melancholic, theme (It Aldershs). Then we hear a short choral with a melody from the sixteenth century. The next theme has the character of a barcarole and is usually attributed to Mozart (Wldsang). The finale is a kind of tarantella and asks for quite some virtuosity from the band (Yn 'e Snitser merke).

This is the fifth and final movement of the colourful suite 'Nomenclatura' by Peter Kleine Schaars (1962). After subsequently a salsa, a ballad, a rumba and a funk melody, here is a capricious piece called Tax Free Finale. This closing part breathes some feeling of unrestricted feelings. A fine conclusion of an innovating original suite for symphonic band, but a fin conclusion for your concerts too.

Johann Wenzeslaus Calliwoda composed Introduction, Theme and Variations opus 128 in 1844, and he dedicated this piece to the virtusoso contemporary Carl Brmann.. This solo work contains a lot of recognizable influences from German early Romanticism. Long dreamy melody lines and jagged character changes are followed through numerous variations. It seems as so the composer wants to show the listener what the absloute technical capabilities of the clarinet are.
