Aurelia (CB) - Filip Ceunen
The concert march Aurelia was commissioned by Wind band 'Sint-Jorisgilde' from Meerhout-Gestel (B) on the occasion of their 115th anniversary. The march was written in a cinematic style with references to the anthem 'Oh mijn liefste Meerhout' - Oh my dearest town of Meerhout. The name 'Aurelia' is based on the topographical configuration of Meerhout, as it were, which is in the form of a butterfly. Aurelia is the Latin word for (gold) butterfly.

This suite of three short movements depicts Popcatepetl, a dormant volcano in Mexico. Useful for developing understanding of this form, the composition includes overture, ballad, and Latin styles. Opportunities abound for teaching the concepts of dynamic contrast, balance between sections, and rhythmic development. There are several short solos, but most of the composition works on the development of full-ensemble skills. Although the movements can be performed as stand-alone selections, the entire suite is less than 6 minutes in length.

Hangin' Ten is one of two movements of a composition called "Barefeet." The works may be played separately or together in a concert. This movement opens with sounds that are a bit mystical, then moving to a Latin jazz/rock style. It is quite syncopated and a fun song for your audience. The ranges are mostly within a Grade 4, though the last note of the Trumpet is C. Rhythmically it is challenging and a bit reminiscent of "West Side Story."

This work is a three-part composition based on the Latin words meaning Strength, Skill, and Character. The piece opens with a poignant fanfare depicting the strength of the modern concert band, which is followed by a fast-paced section, meant to demonstrate the performers' skills. After moving back to the skill theme in a new key, it builds to a dramatic climax, followed by a short coda that bursts to the finish. Ideal for concert or contest.
