    Hornpipe Highlights - Johan Nijs

The Hornpipe is a typical Celtic solo dance, traditionally danced and performed by English sailors. A sound often associated with the Hornpipe is that of the Bdhran, an Irish drum made with a sheep's skin head. John Nijs has taken great care in creating an authentic-sounding Hornpipe in which the Bdhran part is played by the tambourine, but sounds just as good!

    Marche Hroique - Menno Bosgra

The main theme is introduced quite subtly in the beginning and then the instrumentation gradually widens and all groups ultimately join in together. This leads to an impressive climax which gradually fades away just as it arrived. This innovative concert march is extremely suitable for young and dynamic ensembles and allows you to develop the sound and manner of playing.

    Four Pictures - Árpád Balázs

The teachers under whom rpd Balzs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift rpd Balzs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Ngy kp (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given the title Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indul (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Jtk (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! Alphamonic Overture - Satoshi Yagisawa

Alphamonic Overture is an opening piece that serves equally well at other points in a concert programme. This unique work is based on the syllables of the name of the orchestra: just as Ravel once wrote a piece using the letters of Haydn's name, Satoshi Yagisawa transformed 'Alphamonic' into 'la-mi-si-la-la-fa-la-so-ti-do' and employed this note row into the basis for the entire composition.

Where Eagles Sing - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

The inspiration for this piece came when the composer visited Florida and the Bird Sanctuary in Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom. He was in the audience to see the rare bird's show where he witnessed some fabulous looking and endangered birds that were trained to perform different tricks that wowed the audience. The highlight for him was the conclusion of the show where the most awesome sight greeted us as an American Bald Eagle soared over the audience. That particular breed of Eagle has been a very rare bird of late. With so few in numbers, it nearly became a member of the sad group of animals that are extinct. The host of the show took great delight in informing the audience that the fantastic creature is now officially safe and no longer classed as endangered. This made a great impact on the composer as the Eagle is an amazing bird, huge in size and power and yet so graceful in flight. This piece is everything associated with the Eagle; bold, powerful and graceful and now free to soar and sing in the American homelands.Where Eagles Sing has been hugely successful as a curtain-raiser (or finale) with brass bands around the world and it is hoped that this version for wind band will be just as popular.
