Cos fan tutte - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
In 1786 Mozart composed his wonderful opera Le Nozze di Figaro (KV 492). The Italian libretto, based on the play Le mariage de Figaro by Beaumarchais, was written by Lorenzo da Ponte--who also made the libretti of Mozart's opera's Don Giovanni and Cos fan tutte. In the opera Le Nozze di Figaro, Count Almaviva tries to seduce the fiance of Figaro, his valet. Eventually, through four acts full of complicated intrigue, he is outwitted. In his music, Mozart--at times in a humorous way--reflects the numerous social and erotic intrigues with both empathy and insight. The brilliant overture is just as vivacious and witty as the opera itself. Mozart delightfullyanticipates the passion and playful love that is to come. The skillful transcription for concert band by Tohru Takahashi certainly does justice to this appealing music.

The teachers under whom rpd Balzs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift rpd Balzs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Ngy kp (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given the title Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indul (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Jtk (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! Hornpipe Highlights - Johan Nijs
The Hornpipe is a typical Celtic solo dance, traditionally danced and performed by English sailors. A sound often associated with the Hornpipe is that of the Bdhran, an Irish drum made with a sheep's skin head. John Nijs has taken great care in creating an authentic-sounding Hornpipe in which the Bdhran part is played by the tambourine, but sounds just as good!

Where Eagles Sing - Paul Lovatt-Cooper
The inspiration for this piece came when the composer visited Florida and the Bird Sanctuary in Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom. He was in the audience to see the rare bird's show where he witnessed some fabulous looking and endangered birds that were trained to perform different tricks that wowed the audience. The highlight for him was the conclusion of the show where the most awesome sight greeted us as an American Bald Eagle soared over the audience. That particular breed of Eagle has been a very rare bird of late. With so few in numbers, it nearly became a member of the sad group of animals that are extinct.The host of the show took great delight in informing the audience that the fantastic creature is now officially safe and no longer classed as endangered. This made a great impact on the composer as the Eagle is an amazing bird, huge in size and power and yet so graceful in flight. This piece is everything associated with the Eagle; bold, powerful and graceful and now free to soar and sing in the American homelands.Where Eagles Sing has been hugely successful as a curtain-raiser (or finale) with brass bands around the world and it is hoped that this version for wind band will be just as popular.

Each Life Converges - Peter Meechan
Each Life Converges was written to celebrate the retirement of my dear friend Terry Austin.Writing a piece to celebrate someone you know so well is such an honour - and as I reflected on his wonderful career as a musician, teacher, and administrator I couldn't help but think of the lives that are richer because of Terry Austin. Whether that is students who have gone on to become teachers and inspired their own generations of musicians (who will no doubt go on to inspire further generations), or people who have got to know him through music and maybe taken other paths through life, but are forever enriched by all he gave and continues to give.Just as Terry inspired others, he was himself inspired and shaped by his mentors, colleagues, and - perhaps most importantly - friends. In Each Life Converges I try to show this through an initial simple melody from which, on each repetition, new countermelodies and musical lines grow, always enriching the main melody.No words about Terry would ever be complete without mentioning his dearly missed friend, Dennis Zeisler - someone who, like Terry, enriched the lives of all those who were fortunate enough to encounter him. Each Life Converges is written in memory of Dennis and dedicated to my friends Terry and his wife Tracia on the occasion of Terry's retirement.Each Life Converges was commissioned by Tiffany Hitz and Matthew McCutchen, and was premiered by the Virginia Commonwealth University Alumni Band, conducted by Duane Coston, June 11 2022.Peter Meechan 2022
