Tangle Wood Overture - Daisuke Shimizu

With this festive overture, which can also be played as a concert work, we introduce this young Japanese composer for the first time. He is already a real superstar in Japan, and with this piece, we get a little peek at why this is so. This piece is reminiscent of a flashy movie soundtrack with powerful and enthralling melodies and spectacular rhythmical sections. A very promising piece from a very promising composer.

    10W-60 - Naoya Wada

10W-60 is the name of an engine oil that is entirely synthetic, has a very long life and is used mainly in vehicles from which high performance is required. In this way the composer makes the link with speed and energy, two important elements that can also be found in this three-part composition. Naoya Wada dedicated this piece to the famous Japanese trumpet-player Kazuki Hayasaka, and incorporated elements of boogie, Gershwin and rock.

Chopin Always With You - Yasuhide Ito

Referred to as the poet of the piano, Chopin (1810-1949) is known for his gorgeous melodies so beloved for the past 200 years. The French-derived title, "Chopin, Always with You" depicts this sense of endearment for his music. This composition was first introduced in the 2010 Band Journal (a popular Japanese wind band magazine) commemorating the composer's bicentennial. Since Chopin's melodies are not often translated to the wind band medium, it is my hope that many will enjoy his splendid musical gifts.

Le Nozze di Figaro - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

In 1786, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his wonderful opera Le Nozzi di Figaro. In the opera Count Almaviva tries to seduce the fiance of Figaro, his valet. Eventually, through four acts full of complicated intrigue, he is outwitted. In his music, Mozart, at times in a humorous way, reflects the numerous social and erotic intrigues with both empathy and insight. The brilliant overture is just as vivacious and witty as the opera itself. Mozart delightfully anticipates the passion and playful love that is to come. The skillful transcription for concert band by the Japanese composer Tohru Takahashi certainly does justice to this enchanting music.

    Sakura (Cherry Blossoms)

Sakura is an ancient Japanese children's song. It is traditionally accompanied by a koto (a long 13-stringed instrument) or a shamisen (a 3-stringed lute) and various gongs, drums and bells. This is a musical visit to a culture quite different from our own. Captivating! (2:00) This title is available in SmartMusic.

Written for famed Japanese marimba soloist, Reiko Kono. This concerto-like work is accompanied by the full resources of the modern concert band. The movements are a romantic "Nocturne", a gay, lilting "Scherzetto", and a brilliant "Toccata" which is surprisingly set to a swing-boogie rhythmic background.

On Wings of Magic - Naoya Wada

Japanese composer Naoya Wada's engaging composition is full of rhythmic energy and vitality. Scored to help mid-level bands perform at their highest level, the technical demands are reasonable, but the musical rewards will be great. All sections have interesting parts and a large number of parts will keep even the largest percussion section involved and interested. Exceptional choice for concert or contest performances.
