Klezmer was originally the name given to the music of the Yiddish speaking Jews in Eastern Europe. The klezmer musicians played dance music, mainly at weddings. Historically string instruments such as the violin were predominantly used, but later (after ca. 1900) other instruments and in particular the clarinet were added as melodic instruments. In klezmer music in addition to Balkan influences oriental and gipsy influences can also be found. Jacob de Haan composed Klezmania in this style, based on the well-known Hebrew song Hava Nagila.

Remembrance Day (Totengedenken) is a chorale-like piece in memory of those who have died in service. Jacob de Haan composed this work for a concert by the symphonic wind orchestra Symphonic Winds, which he conducted in Germany on Volkstrauertag (national remembrance day). The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages, and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. Choir parts are also available to complement the performance.

Everest is the name of a restaurant on the 40th floor of a skyscraper in Chicago. In 2003 the composer Jacob de Haan had dinner there together with his publishers and other fellow composers. The idea of composing a march to honour the excellent cuisine, the magnificent view of the skyline and the pleasant atmosphere in the restaurant arose during the visit. The results can be heard in this delightful and unusual work.

The town of Zevenhuizen (Seven Houses) in the Dutch province of Groningen conceived the idea to assemble 777 musicians for an experimental open air concert. Within that context, Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write a special composition for the local music society Concordia on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. The full number of musicians could not be realised entirely, but the performance was a great happening nonetheless. Now, the music has been published in a compilation, with the most appealing melodies in a varying style of rock music and ballads. The main theme of this composition was created on a clear, starry night on the 10th of August. While writing it, the Italian composer Angela Ciampani was inspired by her son Lorenzo and the sight of stars over the green hills of Umbria. Initially, it was a short solo for trumpet and piano: subsequently, Jacob de Haan extended and rewrote the composition for euphonium solo and band. This arrangement was created for the celebration of the 170th and 20th anniversaries, respectively, of the concert bands of Monteleone d'Orvieto and Citt della Pieve. Duration: 3.45
