    Little Champ - Ted Mesang

As one of the most popular and easy quick-step marches by a well-known educator and composer, Little Champ uses the form with great verve and respect for its conventions. With its memorable themes and countermelodies, this classic deserves to be discovered by a new generation of young musicians, and Quincy Hilliard's concert edition should be just the thing to help that happen. A Starry Night - Score and Parts - Joy Webb

Program NotesJoy Webb's A Starry Night was originally a huge success for The Salvation Army's 1960s pop phenomenon "The Joystrings." The breadth of the song's popularity continues to be a source of amazement to the writer herself, but the attractive simplicity and accessibility of the tune has made it one of the most widely used Christmas songs, particularly in schools and playgroups!Andrew Mackereth, who is the Bandmaster of the Salvation Army band at Nuneaton in Warwickshire and also conductor, composer and arranger for The Salvation Army Symphonic Wind Ensemble, has brought his considerable skills as an arranger and composer for both brand and concert band to this familiar Christmas song and produced an attractive dance-like Calypso-style setting that is already gaining huge popularity in its brass band form. This arrangement for concert band is sure to contribute to the ongoing popularity of this song, and will undoubtedly enhance any concert band's Christmas programme too.

Music Xperience (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

The town of Zevenhuizen (Seven Houses) in the Dutch province of Groningen conceived the idea to assemble 777 musicians for an experimental open air concert. Within that context, Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write a special composition for the local music society Concordia on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. The full number of musicians could not be realised entirely, but the performance was a great happening nonetheless. Now, the music has been published in a compilation, with the most appealing melodies in a varying style of rock music and ballads. The compelling closing theme of Music Xperience will linger in the minds of many listeners and players long after the concert has ended.Duration: 8.30

In Dulci Jubilo (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Noble & Rutter

One night in 1328, the German mystic and Dominican monk Henrich Suso (or Seuse) had a vision in which he joined angels dancing as the angels sang to him Nun singet und seid froh or In Dulci Jubilo. In Suso's biography (or perhaps autobiography), it was written: Now this same angel came up to the Servant [Suso] brightly, and said that God had sent him down to him, to bring him heavenly joys amid his sufferings; adding that he must cast off all his sorrows from his mind and bear them company, and that he must also dance with them in heavenly fashion. Then they drew the Servant by the hand into the dance, and the youth began a joyous song about the infant Jesus, which runs thus: 'In dulci jubilo', etc. In Dulci Jubilo is among the oldest and most famous of the macaronic songs, one which combines Latin and a vernacular language such as English or German. Five hundred years later, this carol became the inspiration for the 1853 English paraphrase by John Mason Neale, Good Christian Men, Rejoice. Perhaps the earliest English version appeared c.1540. That popularity has endured for nearly 700 years. It's the rare contemporary collection of Christmas carols that doesn't contain a carol based on this ancient jewel.

Roman Trilogy (Prestige Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ellerby, Martin

This work falls into three movements, all concerned with the subject of the Italian capital city of Rome, rather like previous tributes to other European citites in Paris Sketches, Venetian Spells and The Cries of London. The emphasis is on atmosphere and drama, be they respectful or joyful! It is acknowledged that Ottorino Respighi has influenced this work though his own eternal Rome tributes are not challenged here, rather saluted and celebrated. The three movements are: 1. Collosea di Romaan evergrowing march mood, builds in intensity and density as we approach the mighty Colosseum, the amphitehatre of Classical Rome, where deadly spectacles were once played out. We should not forget that countless thousands died here whilst even more laughed in the name of entertainment: their memory is reflected in the coda. In its unique way this icon of Rome is one of the most tragic historical places.2. Capella Sistinathe Sistine Chapel of the Vatican City is observed in a series of chorales and interludes. The visitor can look 360o around and be presented with a series of Biblical representations and commentaries. The music attempts to reflect these contrasting panels whilst ultimately bowing to the glory of this magnificent artistic creation. The coda is enigmatic, inconclusive - a single viewing cannot reveal all the mysteries and beauties within. 3. Fonatani di Trevitime for laughter and fun! The Trevi Fountain is one of Rome's finest and visually overboard locations! This is indicated as a Burletta: 'a la dolce vita' which means 'the sweet life'. This burletta (meaning 'little joke') makes use of tarantella and saltarello rhythms and features a pair of tambourines which are associated with these forms. La Dolce Vita was also a film by the renowned Italian director Federico Fellini featuring a memorable scene in the Trevi with a wet Enita Ekberg: something modern day visitors are discouraged from emulating!Duration: 11:15Recorded on Polyphonic QPRM161D ROMAN TRILOGY (TheRoyal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra).
