Mountain Dance - Ed Kiefer
Mountain Dance contains three Appalachian folk songs: "Cluck Old Hen," "Sourwood Mountain," and "Poor Polly." It was written to depict the Appalachian region of the country and its heritage of bluegrass music and fine musicianship. Hints offerish music can be heard, as many of the folk songs from this area were developed by the Irish immigrants who settled in this part of the country. These inluences are beautifully embedded in a truly symphonic setting by composer Ed Keifer.

Lanigan's Ball - Ed Kiefer

Ed Kiefer starts with a solo clarinet on the jig Lanigan's Ball that builds and builds to a dramatic presentation of the folk song, before leading a section of repose based on the song Binnorie. The percussion is highlighted in a build-up to the climax where the tunes are combined for a dramatic conclusion.

Ireland is a multi-faceted country that has developed a popular and distinctive musical culture. The first movement of Dublin Pictures reflects Irish festivals where there is dancing and traditional beer flowing. More tranquil in its feel, the second movement illustrates the landscape that can be seen from the Ha'penny Bridge, a bridge that crosses the River Liffey in Dublin. This movement highlights the wide range of the orchestra's sound colours as the musicians' voices combine with the wind and percussion to accompany the soloist. The lively and joyful rhythms of the last movement take the listener to Temple Bar, the famous tourist quarter of the city, well knownfor its vibrant nightlife. The music's energy and virtuosic motifs are in contrast to the previous movement and provide a spirited and festive finale.Marc Jeanbourquin wrote this piece in three movements for Azimuts Brass in 2011. For countless years the legendary Kitty O'Shea's, a bar at the Hilton & Towers Hotel in Chicago, has been the favourite meeting place for participants of the annual Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic. It was at this bar that Johan de Meij met Max McKee, from whom he eventually received a commission to write a work based on the folk music of McKee's Irish forefathers. De Meij immersed himself in the project and received unexpected help when, while purchasing an espresso machine from a neighbour, discovered the owner was Bill Whelan, composer of Riverdance. Jig - Gustav Holst
Together with his good friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst had a strong liking for the abundant folk music of the British Isles. This influence is heard in many of his works and is perhaps strongest in his Second Suite for Military Band and in the Saint Paul Suite for string orchestra. This work was composed in 1913 for the school orchestra of St. Paul's Girls School in London, where Holst was the Director of Music. The suite opens with this exuberant Jig, a dance originating from Scottish and Irish folk music in alternating duple and triple time (6/8 and 9/8), which has been expertly arranged for concert band.

The success of Bill Whelan's Riverdance evolved from a concept for music and dance that he established earlier with The Seville Suite, his first major orchestral composition. The Seville Suite was commissioned for Ireland's National Day at the World Expo 1992 in Seville, Spain. Through the score, Whelan tells the story of legendary Irish war hero Red Hugh O'Donnell. At a mere 21 years of age, O'Donnell successfully led a rebellion against the English government in 1593. Johan de Meij's arrangement is a 13-minute adaptation featuring highlights from the original suite.
