Scaff! is an adaptation of the famous 4th movement of the Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz in swing style. The story of the March to the Scaffold is a tragic one where the subject, in a depressive state over a love interest, overdoses on opium. He dreams that he has killed his beloved and after his procession to the scaffold is now witnessing his own death. This arrangement doesn't really reflect those tragic circumstances but instead redresses this great tune into a toe-tapping big band number.

The poignant lament "Mo Chile Mear" (My Gallant Hero) was authored after the defeat of the Scots and their Celtic allies at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, ending dreams of independence from English rule. Michael's emotional setting opens with a flute solo then builds gradually as layers of instrumental groups are added. The piece shifts to a lilting 6/8 style, propelled by the percussion section, and culminates in a majestic statement by the entire ensemble.

SOLILOQUY FOR SOLFERINO (Prestige Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ellerby, Martin
The Battle of Solferino was fought in northern Italy in 1859 between Austria and the alliance of France and Sardinia. After 15 hours of fighting, the Austrians retreated leaving some 40,000 killed or injured. The medical forces that existed were unable to cope and many died from simple wounds. Swiss businessman and social activist, Henry Dunant, witnessed this suffering and set about a process that led to the Geneva Conventions and the foundation of the International Red Cross movement.
