When the morning stars sang - James Curnow
At times intimate and reflective, at times boisterous and unrelenting, this uplifting new work by James Curnow was inspired by the biblical story of Job and his "never give up" attitude. The old spiritual Balm in Gilead is incorporated as the piece takes us through tribulation and solace, turmoil and relief. The full spectrum of orchestration from rich, dark Brasses to flashing Woodwinds, and some small solo recitatives create contrast in density as well as mood. There is a great deal to appreciate in the scoring and construction of this piece as you prepare for performance.

This work was composed by John Rutter to mark the colourful commemoration of the landmark event in the history of justice and freedom, the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta on June 15, 2015. The prevailing mood of the piece is festive, but a prayerful moment before the closing pages is Orlando Gibbons lovely hymn-tune 'Song 1', to new words expressing the theme of the occasion. In this arrangement, there is the flexibility of performing it with combined band and chorus, or by band alone, and with the added option of having the band sing the Gibbons hymn-tune.

Its title, Hail the Dragon!, references a work Philip Sparke wrote in 1984, The Year of the Dragon. The piece opens with a lively and energetic fanfare. The mood becomes more subdued in the centre section as a new theme is introduced that builds to an emotional climax. This leads into a recap of the opening fanfare which acts as a type of descant to short quotations from the last movement of The Year of the Dragon before reaching a thunderous finale.Duration: 4.45
