Tetraktys (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Coulembier, Klaas

Tetraktys, named after a mathematical concept of Pythagoras, is a festive and varied work, composed for the tenth anniversary of the Ghent University Wind Band. A mysterious introduction paves the way for a driving allegro, in which all sections of the orchestra are featured. The slow middle part offers a moment of repose, introduced by a lyrical theme presented by the clarinet section. After a brief recollection of the fast movement, the mood shifts into a swinging big band-style passage, that leads directly into the finale.Duration: 10.30

Hymn at Twilight (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Although specifically describing the uncertainty of approaching night and an evening prayer, Hymn at Twilight is actually about the human emotions of doubt, insecurity, hope and resolve. This solemn piece opens quietly and introduces a recurring four-note rising figure. Optimism, anxiety and resignation alternate, with the flute taking centre stage. Brass and woodwind take up the chorale. The piece ends in a mood of sanguine optimism.Duration: 9.30

Barnaby Behaves Badly (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

This vivacious programme number was written for Barnaby (more often known as Barney), Simba's (see At The 'Splash' with Sim) predecessor in the composer's Golden Retriever succession. He was a very laid back and happy soul, not the brightest-ever retriever, but with the potential for a little mischief when the mood took him. It was written with the intention of being eminently playable so both the range and the technical demands are carefully controlled and the scoring is designed to make the music sound strong with a band of less experienced players.

Ave Maria (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Memley, Kevin A. - Hazzard, Preston

Originally a composition for chorus by Kevin A. Memley, this adaptation by Preston Hazzard makes expert use of the various tone colours available for band. Cascading waterfall effects are represented in the mallet percussion and woodwinds, while an underlying rhythmic texture provides a flowing background for the lyric melody. The piece builds nicely to a full band climax before returning to a quiet and delicate mood for the close.Duration: 4:15

Passages (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sweeney, Michael

The term passage can variously describe a passageway of travel, a musical phrase, or perhaps the soul's moving on from this world to the next. In this work for band, dark and rich sonorities are contrasted with a lilting, Celtic-flavoured melody as it alternates with striking "passages" from the brass. Later, an alto sax soloist adds a haunting quality to the mood followed by a return of the ethnic drumming heard earlier. This unique and rewarding composition is beautifully paced and skilfully orchestrated using every section of the band.Duration: 7:00
