£104.99The Source - Bert Appermont
At the heart of this piece are several elements that inspired the composer. First of all: nature, infinite and inexhaustible, giving life and power, something bigger than humans can grasp. The composer used the Gregorian hymn 'Veni Creator Spiritus' as a leitmotiv to reflect this idea. A second element was the passing of David Maslanka, a dear friend of the composer, honoured in the work by a few musical 'echoes'. At the end of the work, there is a passage for optional choir in different possible settings. The Source was commissioned by the Banda Giovanlie Regionale ANBIMA FVG, Italy, and is an impressive, stirring and moving piece of music.

Commissioned for a consortium of high school and college bands in the north Dallas region, For the Mystic Harmony is a 10-minute inspirational work in homage to Norwood and Elizabeth Dixon, patrons of the Fort Worth Symphony and the Van Cliburn Competition. Welcher draws melodic flavor from five American hymns, spirituals, and folk tunes of the 19th century. The last of these sources to appear is the hymn tune For the Beauty of the Earth, whose third stanza is the quatrain: "For the joy of ear and eye, For the heart and mind's delight, For the mystic harmony, Linking sense to sound and sight," giving rise to the work's title.

Inspired by the ever-popular snack, Pop! is a grade 3 band piece by composer Tawnie Olson that imitates the sounds popping popcorn beginning with that first, single kernel to the exploding sounds of an overflowing pot. Through the use of imitation, additive processes, playful articulation, and the development of tune fragments, Olson crafted a piece that is relatable and great fun to play. Pop! also has an aleatoric passage that gives young performers the opportunity to co-compose by improvising sounds that suggest of pop of popcorn in the making. BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. The source of inspiration for this work was the play Das Kthchen von Heilbronn (Katie of Heilbronn), which was written by Heinrich von Kleist in 1810. The music evokes the underlying drama, tensions and emotions of the characters involved: "The Blacksmith's Daughter", "Kunigunde", "The Fire" and "The Emperor's Daughter". The title 'Battle of Hearts' refers to the two women from the story (Kthchen and Kunigunde), who both fight to win the heart of Count Von Strahl. This is an impressive, non programmatic but strong thematic work suitable for concerts or contests. This work was commissioned by Blserjugend Kreisverband Heilbronn.

Ola Gjeilo, born in 1978 in Norway, moved to the United States when he was 23 years old to study composition at the Julliard School. He composed this dense and richly textured setting of the Sanctus for the Uranienborg Vokalensemble shortly after he graduated in 2006. Eric Wilson has skillfully captured the magic of the original choral work in this transcription for winds. Ola Gjeilo stated the following regarding Sanctus: "It's one piece of mine that remains closest to my heart."

One must uncover the essence beyond appearances using the heart. The musical story The Little Prince, based on the famous work by Saint-Exupry, addresses both children and adults. Various levels of meanings make the story enjoyable for everyone and offer themes for reflection to people of any age. In the present work, the relationship between words and music creates the magic that accompanies the journey of the little prince among asteroids and planets. Wind band, narrator, and projection of images combine to make the performance a unique experience, which intimately ties narrative, expressive, and communicative aspects. Offered for Concert Band, the musical story The Little Prince, with its evocative and passionate features, will turn the concert into an unforgettable and emotional experience.
