£68.00A Joyful Noise - Steven Rosenhaus
"A Joyful Noise" was originally commissioned for 2 F horns. The title comes from Psalm 100, which begins (in English) "Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!" In early 2022, composer Steven Rosenhaus followed up on a suggestion to make the music, originally for two horns and organ, available to more musicians; he rescored it for two euphoniums or trombones and band, changing nothing substantial except transposing the work to better fit the new ensemble. Though the 1st trumpet's highest note is G and the range of the instruments stay pretty much within the range of a grade 3, the composition is quite syncopated, thus moving its grade level to a 4. This is a great work to explore these rhythms while staying within an accessible range for your band.

Florence Price was an American classical composer, pianist, organist and music teacher. She is noted as the first African-American woman to be recognised as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Price composed over 300 works: four symphonies, four concertos, as well as choral works, art songs, chamber music and music for solo instruments. In 2009, a substantial collection of her works and papers that had been previously considered lost was found in her abandoned summer home. Amongst these was this delightful work, Adoration, which had been composed in the 1950s for organ. According to IMSLP.org, the piece "failed to meet notice or renewal requirements to secure statutory copyright with no 'restoration' under the GATT amendments" and therefore is in the public domain. A version for violin and piano by Elaine Fine has become popular. This setting for trumpet soloist with wind band has been arranged by John Hanchett. Here's your contest piece for your middle school band. A solid Grade 3 with interaction in between the various sections of the band. The tempos are medium, slow, and a bit fast, but non troppo! The harmonies have some post-romantic sounds with longing melodies and interacting counter-melodies. The recapitulation has just a little bit of variety with changes of rhythms and maybe a surprise harmony or two.

La Valiente is a rousing Spanish piece that combines flamenco, tango, and just plain fun that's sure to be a bright spot on any group's next concert. Written in d minor, it modulates approximately halfway through to a happier sounding F major, but as the piece concludes, students find themselves back in d minor. While there are quite a few accidentals, there are none within the piece by which students playing grade 3 music should be surprised, and they lend a nice authenticity to the sound. 1st trumpet's highest note is G. 1st and 2nd clarinets, only, cross the break.

The piece is a homage to the actual Citadel (also known as the Cairo Citadel). It was built during the medieval Islamic-era fortification of Egypt by Salah ad-Din and developed further by subsequent Egyptian rulers. The Citadel of Saladin was in use during some of the most significant events in Egyptian history, from the time it was constructed to the end of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, which was in power from the early nineteenth century until the 1952 revolution, when the modern Egyptian republic was born. It is written in C-minor. Only the 1st clarinet crosses the break, and the 1st trumpet's highest note is F. The duration and some of the rhythms bring this work to an easy grade 3.

Nauset is one of three movements of a larger work called "Beachscapes." Nauset beach is located on the ocean side of Cape Cod Massachusetts, where the largest waves can be found on the New England coast. This music is a bit whimsical, portraying a beach scene with surfers falling off their boards, people on the beach, and people going to the food shacks. The music is quite syncopated and gives a jazzy, fun atmosphere.Ranges are mostly within a Grade 3 range, with the 1st trumpet's highest note is G.
