Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes. According to legend, she lives in Kilauea, one of the worlds most active volcanoes. The chant of her devotees while Kilauea spews lava and fire into the sky is the basis of this composition. The first of four connected sections is Tribute, where the chant starts as a solo voice that adds weight to the chant with each repetition. The Awakening begins with an ominous mood that builds to an explosive climax as Pele wakes and reveals herself in full glory. March to the Sea comes at a faster tempo as two themes, creator and destroyer, interweave during Peles unyielding journey to the ocean, reaching fever pitch as Fire Meets Water.

With his innovative style, he has had a great influence on Western classical music. 'Die Himmel rhmen des Ewigen Ehre' (The Heavens Extol the Glory of God) is the first line of the poem 'Die Ehre Gottes in der Natur', which was written by Christian Frchtegott Gellert (1715-1769). The music that Beethoven composed to the text, was published in 1803, as the fourth Lied (song) in a cycle of six (6 Lieder nach Gedichten von Gellert, opus 48). Thomas Doss has arranged the song - in which nature, as created by God, is mirrored majestically - into a wonderfulwork for concert band.

II) Slowly the rising early-morning mist reveals the distant ruins of Urquhart Castle, represented by a solemn theme in the trombones which is taken over by the full band, thus evoking the illustrious past of this fortress besieged so many times. III) Inverness: Bagpipes and Tourists - the music takes us down to the town of Inverness where the first tourists mark the slow but steady start of a new season to the sound of a Scottishmelody. IV) Storm - suddenly a heavy wheater breaks: fierce gusts of wind and heavy showers transform the erstwhile calm surface into an obscure and whirling mass of water, and clouds rapidly passing over offer an eery scene... V) Conclusion - storm and rain gradually decrease and when everything is quiet again we are granted a last view of the Lake in its full glory.

Commissioned for the Ensemble Liberte Wind Orchestra, Kawaguchi City, 30th Anniversary ConcertExplaining the significance of Machu Picchu begins with remembering the Incan empire at its zenith, and its tragic encounter with the Spanish conquistadors. The great 16th century empire that unified most of Andean South America had as its capital the golden city of Cuzco. Irresistible to Francisco Pizarro, while stripping the city of massive quantities of gold, in 1533 he also destroyed Cuzco's Sun Temple, shrine of the founding deity of the Incan civilization.While that act symbolized the end of the great empire, 378 years later an archeologist from Yale University, Hiram Bingham, rediscovered "Machu Picchu", a glorious mountaintop Incan city that had escaped the attention of the invaders. At the central high point of the city stands its most important shrine, the Intihuatana, or "hitching post of the sun", a column of stone rising from a block of granite the size of a grand piano, where a priest would "tie the sun to the stone" at winter solstice to insure its seasonal return. Finding the last remaining Sun Temple of a great city inspired the belief that perhaps the royal lineage stole away to this holy place during Pizarro's conquest.After considering these remarkable ideas I wished to musically describe that magnificent citadel and trace some of the mysteries sealed in Machu Picchu's past. Three principal ideas dominate the piece: 1) the shimmering golden city of Cuzco set in the dramatic scenery of the Andes, 2) the destructiveness of violent invasion, and 3) the re-emergence of Incan glory as the City in the Sky again reached for the sun.(Satoshi Yagisawa)
