£126.50Slava! - Wind Band - Leonard Bernstein
The first theme of Slava! is a vaudevillian razz-ma-tazz tune filled with side-slipping modulations and sliding trombones. The second theme is a canon, and after a brief development section, the two themes recur in reverse order. Near the end, they are combined with a quotation (proclaimed by the ubiquitous trombones) from the Coronation Scene of Moussorgsky's 'Boris Goudonov', where the chorus sings the Russian word slava!, meaning, glory! In this way, the composer is paying homage to his friend Mistislav Rostropovich, called 'Slava' by his friends and to whom the overture is fondly dedicated. The overture was written to celebrateRostropovich's inauguration as music director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., in 1977. Leonard Bernstein, the son of a Russian immigrant, was born near Boston, Mass., and studied composition at Harvard. Edward Elgar composed his Variations on an Original Theme, Op.36, popularly known as the Enigma Variations, between October 1898 and February 1899. It is an orchestral work comprising fourteen variations on an original theme. Elgar dedicated the work "to my friends pictured within", each variation being a musical sketch of one of his circle of close acquaintances. Nimrod (the mighty hunter before the Lord) has become the most played of the variations, and the movement is dedicated to Elgar's close friend Augustus Jaeger (Jager being German for hunter). Cockaigne Overture was composed when Edward Elgar received a commission from the Royal Philharmonic Society, and he reported that the new piece was "cheerful and Londony, 'stout and steaky'...honest, healthy, humorous and strong, but not vulgar." The first performance was in the Queen's Hall, London, on 20 June 1901, conducted by the composer. He dedicated the work to his "many friends, the members of British orchestras." The music was an immediate success and became one of Elgar's most popular works. In its 15 minutes or so, the overture gives a lively and colourful musical portrait of Edwardian London. 'Cockaigne' was a term used by moralists at that time as a metaphor for gluttony and drunkenness, while Britain adopted the name humorously for London, and from it we get the Cockney. Cockaigne or Cockayne /ka' kein/, the word origin tracing back to the 13th century, is a land of plenty in medieval myth, an imaginary place of extreme luxury and ease where physical comforts and pleasures are always immediately at hand and where the harshness of medieval peasant life does not exist. The work presents various aspects of turn-of-the-century London and Londoners. It begins with a quiet but bustling theme which leads into an unbroken sequence of snapshots: the cockneys, the church bells, the romantic couples, a slightly ragged brass band (perhaps the Salvation Army) and a contrastingly grand and imperious military band. The broad theme representing Londoners has been stated as the first occurrence of Elgar's trademark direction, 'nobilmente.' The work ends in a characteristically Elgarian blaze of sound, including an optional full organ.

£84.99For Whom the Bell Tolls - Philip Sparke
For Whom the Bells Tolls was commissioned by the Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra, who gave the premiere in their 10th anniversary concert, held in the Artane School of Music, Dublin, on the 31st August 2024.The commission was funded by money raised to provide a piece which commemorated friends and members of the orchestra who had recently passed away. This prompted the choice of title, taken from the famous poem by English writer John Donne (1572 - 1631), which reminds us that the death of anyone affects us all.The work opens with an enigmatic duet between oboe and clarinet. This is taken up by the full band and leads to the work's main theme, a lyrical chorale, which builds to a passionate climax. A central section, introduced by the English horn (cue clarinet), eventually leads back to a triumphal return of the chorale on full band. The mood subsides to introduce an echo of the opening material, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

Nimrod is the name given to the ninth and best-known variation inEdward Elgar's Enigma Variations, an orchestral work of 14 variations on an original theme composed between 1898 and 1899. Each variation is also a portrait of one of 14 members of Elgar's family and circle of friends. A celebrated work, Nimrod is a portrait of Augustus Johannes Jaeger, who in addition to being his best friend was also Elgar's editor.The variations all represent a series of portraits and as such are entitled with a name or initials that identify the person. Biblically, Nimrod is a great hunter of the Old Testament, thus representing his muse through a play on words: Jger in German means 'hunter'. The melody appears to represent a nocturnal stroll during which the two discuss Ludwig van Beethoven's slow movements; the first eight bars, in fact, recall the beginning of the second movement of the Pathtique Piano Sonata.An arrangement of classical music signed by Franco Cesarini which stands out for its skilful and careful instrumentation.
