To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan, Commander and Conductor.The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer's aim to provide a work which, as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century, also contained moments of reflection about the last one.After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme, passing quickly through several keys, appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets, followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and, after ashort bridge passage, an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax.An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and, eventually, to a full recapitulation, revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began.

The piece opens with a plaintive Irish style flute solo, then moves seamlessly to the fast-paced section loosely based around the Appalachian fiddle tune Glory in the Meeting House introduced by the bodhran (Irish frame drum). £64.95PURCELL VARIANTS (Advanced Concert Band) - Meechan, Peter
Purcell Variants is based on Purcell's Queen Mary's Funeral Music, which consists of four canzonas, two elegies and an anthem. The first movement begins by sounding some of Purcell's original music in the trombones and horns, underpinned by a timpani roll with the woodwind articulating the beginnings and endings of the phrases. This leads into a cadenza for trumpet and alto saxophone before the movement heads in different directions, leading us to its mysterious end, where the original music is sounded this time in the 'stabs' of the clarinets and alto saxophone. Originally composed for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695, Purcell's original funeral music was used later that same year for Purcell's own funeral - he died aged only 34. The second movement is an elegy, inspired by this story. After an introduction (a disjointed last post), the main melody of the movement is introduced by the solo euphonium, with other solo roles for flute, oboe and alto saxophone. This is then taken over by the trumpets who lead us into the middle section of the movement. This is a quasi funeral march, inspired by the image of Purcell's coffin being taken to its final resting point. The main melody returns in the flute, oboe and alto saxophone, this time more elaborated. The movement ends with a snare drum fading away - perhaps a metaphor. The Finale is a fast and furious movement combining thematic material from the two previous movements with new rhythmical ideas. This takes us through to the final passage - the triumphant return of Purcell's original theme. Duration: 13.00

ScherzoMany of the principal musical ideas for Divertimento for Band are derived from music composed for a documentary film called Country Camera, which celebrated the work of the earliest photographers who recorded a way of life which vanished at the outset of the first World War.The three movements are played without a break. The Toccata pits a four-note motif (which always appears with its mirror image) against several other derived ideas, including a sour horn (later trumpet) figure, a tiny lyrical passage initiated by a solo alto saxophone, and a more gentle, but still staccato episode. Many polytonal devices keep the four-note motif active. The Aubade contrasts a lyrical pastorale, initiated by a solo flute, with a more intense central section on the brass. The Scherzo finale has three main ideas; a tune for principal bassoon and euphonium of a playful child-like nature, a rushing figure for the woodwinds later developed by the full band, and a solo for trumpet and clarinet, involving a descending scale and a lyrical wide-leaping recovery. The exuberant coda is derived from themes from the previous two movements.The world premiere of Divertimento for Band was given at the conference of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles in Killarney on 13th July 2007 conducted by the composer, and is affectionately dedicated to Keith Allen, Jayne Rollason and Birmingham Symphonic Winds. -GW

Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band, this three movement work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983. Previously available only in rental, this important work is now available for sale.A note from the composer: Divided into three movements, this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instruments as well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement, the brass section "concertizes" in groups of four brass quintets (2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba or baritone), spread from left to right in back. The saxophones (S, A, T, B) are placed in front of the brass quintets, and the woodwinds occupy the front of the stage, with percussion on the left and right side. These groups, like the brass quintets, play in the concertante style, particularly in the first and last movements. At the same time, each movement contains individual solo passages (for example, timpani and flute in Movement I - "Drum Ceremony" and English horn and other low woodwinds in Movement II - "Elegy"). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of wind and percussion players today, and by the incredible growth of wind ensembles, orchestras, and bands in the last 25 years. Commissioned by the South Stokes Band Boosters of North Carolina, Legend of the Saura is a tribute to the Saura Indians who lived in what today is Stokes County. The piece opens with a vibrant flourish of woodwinds and percussion that immediately leads into the pensive yet driving main theme. The contrasting middle section pulls back to a reflective and mysterious solo for recorder (or optional flute), accompanied by exotic percussion instruments. Written for the Chicago Staff Band's tour of England in 2015, this exhilarating work was premiered at The Salvation Army's Boundless International Congress at London's O2 Arena to an audience of 20,000 people. It has since been arranged here for wind band. The piece is structured as a through-composed triptych, weaving together the popularcontemporary worship songs Shine on Us (Michael W. Smith) and Speak, O Lord (Keith and Kristin Getty) with the historic Salvationist anthem The World for God (Evangeline Booth) to explore themes of light, guidance, and mission. The work opens with energy and rhythmic drive, centering on Shine on Us. A stark contrast follows in the meditative middle section. Here, the music explores the contemplative depths of Speak, O Lord, featuring solo horn. The final section introduces a nostalgic and stirring reference to General Evangeline Booth's classic hymn, The World for God. The finale juxtaposes all three themes. As the disparate melodies intertwine and layer upon one another, the music builds to a triumphant climax - a representation of 'illumination' that celebrates a shared faith across generations.
