For this reason, many ensembles have annual concerts dedicated to Saint Cecila, which was the inspiration forthis piece. It is a festive, optimistic, but also comforting work, which in style perfectly suits the character of Saint Cecilia's Feast Day. This piece requires a smaller woodwind-brass ensemble without percussion. Penderecki composed the Fanfare for a parish fair in Poland. This short effective piece will be a pleasure to rehearse and perform by any wind orchestra. A special role is assigned to the trumpet 'nella sala' which attracts attention away from the ensemble. The wide dynamic range demands from the conductor the careful arrangement of the dramatic structure. Commissioned to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the state of West Virginia, Forever Free incorporates indigenous elements of the state's musical heritage, capturing a robust and celebratory spirit. Cast in a single movement inthree sections, the title is inspired by the state motto, Montani semper liberi (Mountaineeers forever free). The work is unified at the outset and closing by a ceremonial fanfare that is based on thematic figures from the statesong West Virginia Hills. A contrasting middle section features a lyric variant accompanied by a militaristic snare drum and timpani cadence, before all thematic elements are combined for the buoyant and festive conclusion. Bandissima - Wim Laseroms
