The variation form is one of the oldest and most fundamental forms of musical technique. Franco Cesarini has chosen the well known French folk melody, Sur le pont d'Avignon as the basis for this piece. The piece begins with a short introduction followed by the exposition and ten lively and contrasting variations. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY GLINKA was written for solo oboe accompanied by wind band. The theme of the Variations is in a fact a folksong melody which is still occasionally heard in Russia. This edition of VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY GLINKA is based on the full score published by the Russian state publishers and a number of editions of the same piece for solo oboe and piano. Adapted for the present day wind band, the corno basso accompaniment has been rescored for bass clarinet reinforced by optional string bass. Saxophones have been added to the instrumentation in tutti sections, along with rehearsal numbers throughout the meticulously edited full score.

Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. 'AwakeningVillage', the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. 'Bintje Monument' was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) whodeveloped the well-known potato variety called 'bintje'. The finale, 'Journey into the Unknown' refers to the band's memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of thefolksong and fragments from 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.

This arrangement combines the well-known Norwegian folksong "Nringen" with a Springdans. Nringen is a tune associated with traditional wedding celebrations (especially on the morning of the second day of celebration). The song exists in both vocal (stev) and instrumental (gangar) versions. A springdans is a dance in triple meter, usually with an energetic tempo. The traditional triplet ornaments have been removed from this springdans to make it accesible for young wind players.

The imperial anthem composed by Franz Josef Haydn, which to this day, survives as the German national anthem, has played a very special role in the story of Austria. It seems that Haydn was inspired by a Croatian folksong. It was sung in Burgenland Croatian areas in various versions under the title "Atal se jesem" ("I am standing"). The composer wrote this piece as a tribute to all people standing up for democracy in the name of mankind. A festive and impressive piece forcelebrational events alike!

Celtic Fantasy - Keiichi Kurokawa
"Celtic" is a widely used term. Its history and culture expands to modern day Spain, Portugal, and North America.However, in this piece, I have based my music on the typical "Celtic" areas of Ireland and Scotland.The Bagpipe drone at the beginning reappears several times.After the introduction, the music transitions to an Irish Reel, The Wind That Shakes The Barley. Reel is a fast tempo dance, often in 4/4 or 2/2 time.Next is the Scottish folksong Auld Lang Syne, known as "Hotaru no Hikari" in Japan.The third movement is called Scotland the Brave. It is often performed by military bagpipe ensembles. Once air is blown into the bag, there is a constant reservoir of sound for Great Highland Bagpipes.A Part (advanced) is a grade 2.5-3 in American grading system. B Part (beginner) is 1-1.5.B Part is accessible for elementary school and junior high school beginning band students in Japan. However, the drone-sounding sections require a certain technique to hold the sound steady.It is my sincere desire that beginning musicians understand the importance of fundamentals through performing good music.Keiichi Kurokawa
