Composer Robert W. Smith's journey to the San Francisco Bay Area inspired this musical panorama. Beginning with an intriguing fanfare statement representing the unforgettable skyline of San Francisco and the unique images of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, our journey begins north over the waters of the bay. Sailing across the water, we are treated to magnificent vistas including both the city and the surrounding mountains. An early morning sunrise looking down on the vineyards of Sonoma was the inspiration for the center of the piece. The early morning mist combined with light and shadow creates a very peaceful scene that is not soon forgotten. The piece concludes with the return to the city providing a new perspective of this truly unique American landscape.Duration: 6.15

This work is dedicated to Manfred Obrecht, conductor and musical editor. Manfred asked the composer to write a piece that captures the changing colours and mood of a mountain when viewed from a relatively close distance. The work is in four sections:Awakening - early morning and the mountain is covered in cloud, eventually the sun bursts through and reveals the mountain in all its glory.Snow, Ice and Glaciers - between the rocky out-crops ther are layers of snow; slippery ice patches and icicles adorn the overhangs. In the larger crevices and valleys glaciers are formed.Vistas and Distant Peaks - when viewed from other high points one can see the mountain in full outline against the vast landscape.Avalanche - despite its beauty, a mountain can be a dangerous place and the accumulated snow may not be stable, it can easily tumble out of control. The slight twist of major tonalities at the very end reflects the way a sudden change in light can alter the whole perspective.

This vivacious and tuneful overture was written for Rob Wiffin's friends in the Chiltern Concert Band. One of the tunes is actually based on the rhythm of the names of some of the stalwart members who were in the band when Rob Wiffin conducted it in the early 1990s and are still there now.In compositional terms this piece is in the light vein of Chase the Sun and High Spirits, featuring a fanfare opening that reappears towards the end, a slow middle section and a number of bright melodies, mostly built around the interval of a third.Duration: 7.20

Syncopated brass and driving percussion open this sparkling concert selection. The rhythmic woodwind melody that enters after the brief introduction is set in the Dorian mode, a tonality that dominates the remainder of the piece. The very prominent percussion section gives way to a more delicate woodblock, triangle and tambourine ostinato that accompanies the light hearted second theme. Trumpets now take over the melody and the style hints at the early Hispanic roots of Chico Hills. A lyrical theme in the original Dorian mode highlights the slower middle section that builds to a dramatic climax before returning to the opening Allegro and a short exciting conclusion. SINFONIA FOR WINDS (SINFONIA FR BLSER) in G minor, A 509 was written by Gaetano Donizetti (1798-1848) in April of 1817, when the composer was 19-20 years old. Donizetti's catalog includes more than a dozen works under the title "Sinfonia," with this particular early one composed in sonata form for flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, and 2 bassoons already displaying the light, entertaining style that would become his trademark. This newly engraved version, edited by Douglas Townsend, includes detailed notes at the bottom of most pages, offering insight into the editorial decisions made in comparison to Donizetti's autograph score.
