    Early Light - Carolyn Bremer

Carolyn Bremer's brilliant showpiece for orchestra has already been a hit in this version for concert band by the composer. Based on our national anthem, which gives the piece its title as well as much of its musical content, Early Light is also tribute to baseball, the "national pastime." This exciting showpiece has just been added to the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List for festival/contest use. Duration: 5'30"

    First Light - Steven Bryant

The title First Light refers to the arrival of dawn - specifically the composer's experience of dawn in the mountains surrounding Lake Garda in northern Italy. There, the light of the sun arrives in distinct stages: the night sky begins to brighten quite early, though the sun remains hidden behind the mountains for several hours. Abruptly, the first direct ray of sunlight crests the mountaintop, bringing with it intense, palpable heat. The town below, nestled in the narrow space between the water's edge and the steep mountain slope, remains in darkness for a while longer, until the sun ultimately sends light cascading down the mountainside, illuminating everything. Hymn to the Creator of Light (from The Gift of Life) (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Rutter, John - Noble, Paul

The Gift of Life was written early in 2015 as a commission to honour a retiring Minister of Music at a church in Dallas, Texas. In planning this piece, John Rutter has stated: In 1985 I had written a Requiem - which, like any Requiem, inevitably reflects on death - why not write the opposite, a work celebrating life? Unlike a Requiem, where a set form of words is laid down in Catholic liturgy, no framework exists for a celebration of life, and I had to choose (and in three cases, write) texts which were appropriate to a theme rarely expressed in music since Haydn's wondrous oratorio The Creation in 1798. The six movements reflect different facets of the miracles of creation and of life. This arrangement is written for combined Concert Band and Chorus, but may be performed by Concert Band alone.

An Early English Christmas (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - O'Reilly, John

Two lovely English carols are paired together to create a very mature sounding arrangement for young players. After a brief introduction the flute section plays What Child is This? with a light accompaniment. The full ensemble soon enters for a rich rendition of this classic carol. The Coventry Carol is then presented by the flutes and clarinets in 3/4 meter before shifting to a more dramatic 4/4 maestoso for full band.Duration: 2.45

    Shadowplay - Buckley

Shadowplay is a descriptive, impressionistic work inspired by an early morning walk along the beach of the composer's home in Vancouver, Canada. The music reflects the play of light and shadow with the rising of the sun through the trees. It begins calmly, with the sunrise as the light melts the shadows. The piece develops with the sounds and sights of nature: seagulls floating in the air and the crashing of the waves. Shadow becomes light : light becomes shadow. The music ebbs and flows as the sun rises higher on the horizon. "Shadowplay" features a variety of tonal colors and textures, orchestration which is sometimes haunting and transparent, sometimes rich and lush, yet always evocative. After a dramatic build, the music subsides, with all of the melodies interweaving like a tapestry of light and dark and ending as it began, with emotional sensitivity. Features, lyrical solos by soprano saxophone, flute and flugelhorn. An ideal piece for concert or festival use to display sensitivity and dynamics.
