Rumanian Folk Dances - Béla Bartók
Bla Bartk (1888 - 1945) showed from the beginning of his career an interest in popular music. He began studying music at the age of five and eventually focused on composition and piano. He collected a lot of popular songs, especially during his studies in Hungary, but also music from Romania and Slovakia. This had a lot of influence on his style. In his compositions, Bartk uses many Hungarian popular themes and rhythms, and even his own original works always refer to the same rhythmic and melodic folk character. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Bartk detached himself from romanticism and began to delineate his style on harmonic procedures based on diminished and augmented intervals, on bitonality, and on marked percussiveness, characteristics that are at the core of popular music.The Romanian Dances are a collection of seven folk dances, originally composed for piano (1915, the first six) and then transcribed for a small symphonic orchestra (1917). Of purely modal language, like almost all Bartk's music, each dance comes from a different area of Romania (Stick Dance, Sash Dance, In One Spot, Horn Dance, Romanian Polka, Fast Dance of Belnyes, and Fast Dance of Nygra).

Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: "The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. *in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times

'Once Upon a Time in the West', has long been considered one of the best westerns of all time. The composer of the film's music was the Italian, Ennio Morrocone. He composed for many other films (eg The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) as well as other classical orchestral music. This arrangement is a medley of three different themes from 'Once Upon a Time in the West' and two themes from 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'.

Handel in the Strand is one of Grainger's early light orchestral pieces, written in 1911, before he enlisted in the US Army during World War I. Grainger had no trouble allowing other musicians to arrange his music to suit their needs, so Handel in the Strand has existed in several different versions. Grainger himself said of this piece, "...the music seemed to reflect both Handel and English musical comedy... as if jovial old Handel were careening down the Strand (London's Broadway) to the strains of modern English popular music." £99.99Ukrainian Bell Carol - Mykola D. Leontovich
The Ukrainian Bell Carol is part of a large choral work entitled Shchedryk by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). It was first performed by students of Kiev University in December 1916. The tune is an adaptation of an old 'shchedrivka', a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year's Eve (January 13th) which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. In Shchedryk, Leontovych added his own the lyrics which concern the legend claiming that when Jesus was born, all the bells on earth started ringing in his honour.The tune has since been the inspiration of at least four different Christmas carols, but Philip Sparke has sourcedthe original Ukrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement.
