The first African-American bandmaster in the United States Army, Europe gained great popularity as a dance band leader, a military band leader, recording artist, and a composer of merit. Known in New York music circles, and also for touring Europe with his National Guard band, Europe is remembered today for composing several works, including "Castles In Europe" with the subtitle "The Innovation Trot - Ragtime March." The Spanish bandleader Xavier Cugat (Gerona, 1900 - Barcelona, 1990) spent his youth in Cuba before starting a successful career as bandleader in the USA. He created his first dance band in 1928 and five years later he was conductor of the Astoria Hotel Orchestra in New-York. He became world-famous with his interpretations of Latin-American dancemusic. Marcel Peeters wrote a fine arrangement of some of Cugat's greatest hits One Mint Julep, Zombie und Rum and Coca Cola. A sparkling, sensual exotic musical cocktail!
