One of the best known nicknames for a city that is perhaps New York: "The Big Apple". Already in the thirties of the last century, this name is often used in New York jazz scene. With "The Big Apple" Manhattan was intended. It was the place to be. Around 1920 Harlem was the center of a thriving black culture. This period is known as the "Harlem Renaissance". In the famous Cotton Club were many concerts of greats like Duke Ellington. Broadway attracts millions of tourists. Many of them visit here one of the many musicals sometimes for years on the boards are placed. Broadway splashes sparkles and swings. Peter Martin shows usthree bites tests of this imaginary apple. This arrangement was made for The Suoni Wind Orchestra of Skien, Norway, and performed for the first time at their Promenade Concert "At Sea" at the Ibsen Culture Center, March 8th 2014, being the final number of the concert. Participating this concert was also the Choir Canto Libre and the two vocal soloists were Eli Kristin Hansveen and Andreas Hoff. Since that time this arrangement has been used also at other concerts involving choir and soloists. It is important that tempo is not too slow and one has to be thorough with details in the percussion parts. This piece was commissioned for the second edition of the "Suoni d'Aspromonte" National Competition which is held in Cittanova in the province of Reggio Calabria. The title, Oros, from the ancient Greek word for "mount", is a clear reference to the Greek culture that colonised Calabria and the magnificence of the Aspromonte massif that dominates the entire region: forests, towns and sea. The piece consists of three movements: Entrata, Serenata and Corteggio, offering rhythms and melodies that reflect present-day tastes rather than local musical traditions. It is specifically intended for bands with lots of young members.
