Letter from Home was commissioned as a patriotic work in 1944 by Paul Whiteman and his Radio Hall of Fame Orchestra. Composed toward the end of the Second World War, this music suggests the emotions of a soldier reading a letter from home. The music has been described as Copland's 'most sentimental' and reflects his own homesickness while visiting Mexico. Soaring - Sean O'Loughlin
Soaring is an exciting composition for solo trumpet and concert band. The music is celebratory in nature and features the dynamic and rhythmic range of the trumpet. The piece opens with an American rhythmic gesture reminiscent of Aaron Copland and John Williams. The trumpet answers this gesture with a bold cadenza that will transform into the main melody a little later on in the piece. If you have a good trumpet player, this would be a great choice to feature them or it can be used with a feature soloist from elsewhere. Just gorgeous.

New Frontiers - Aaron Blakely
This new concert overture by young composer Aaron Blakely is reminiscent of the great Western movie score genre. It has the bold open intervals of the American sound made famous by Aaron Copland along with a very memorable melody and driving rhythms. The main theme of the piece is contrasted by a lush and lyrical middle section that builds to a wonderful climax before the return of the driving main theme. New Frontiers is a perfect showcase piece for your band to play at contest or festival.

In 1964 I met the American composer, conductor, pianist and educationist Aaron Copland (1900-1990) who was in The Netherlands during an European concert tour. I keep most pleasant memories of his performances and of our conversations. In memory of that great man I made in 1995 a new version of a small composition that I had written in 1970 for the Silver Jubilee of the Metropole Orchestra (of the Dutch Radio Institution) and that was called 'An Indoor Overture'. This short work is a kind of answer to Copland's 'An Outdoor Overture' (1938) in which also light and serious music are harmoniously mixed.Willem Strietman

American Prelude was commissioned by the United States Marine Band "The President's Own" and was composed in honour of the retirement of Colonel Jason K. Fettig, the 28th Director of the USMB. This short and energetic work features subtle hints to two of my favourite American composers, Aaron Copland and John Williams. The performance at Colonel Fettig's final concert with the Marine Band was the world premiere, given at the annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois on December 20st, 2023.Duration: 4.15
