Goin' Home - Antonin Dvorak
Antonin Dvorak first premiered his "New World Symphony" at Carnegie Hall in December of 1893 with the goal to bring American musical sensibility to European classical music. The second movement, labeled Largo, contained the melody that would later be identified as "Goin' Home." This well-crafted adaptation of that beautiful melody for concert band contains all the elements of the original orchestral version that has moved orchestral concert patrons for over a century. Its purpose is to further the repertoire for solo percussionist and orchestral accompaniment--whether brass band, fanfare orchestra or wind band. For a good performance, the soloist should be well-versed in a variety of techniques, and should have a good understanding of the instruments not only technically, but also musically. In terms of the selection of instruments and also technique, the first and second movement are more classical in style, while the final movement--with a set-up of various so-called 'untuned' instruments--is more suited to contemporarysolo kit playing. These distinctions will become clear to the soloist while studying the piece. Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D has long been one of the most popular classical pieces, and has already been connected to Christmas through various setting of the piece. In this arrangment, the Canon is combined with popular Christmas carols as part of the fabric of the piece. The second time it has a slightly different instrumentation, in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling.Final Dance : Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style, followed by a fast dance in rock style. All this composed in a classical song structure: introduction, verse, bridge, chorus, shortened verse, bridge, chorus, chorus.
