The picturesque Mediterranean village has a distinct Spanish flair, and the magnificent landscape surrounding the town leaves a lasting impression. Valdemossa is also a place of cultural tradition - composer Frdric Chopin spent several months in this town. The work consists of several parts merging with various characters. Calm, pensive passages alternate with expressive lyrical and rhythmic parts connected by a theme that returns in different variations. Spanish folklore elements--which are embedded in the formal structure of a"classical" rhapsody and represent the southern European atmosphere of Valdemossa--leave their mark on the complete work.

Master-composer Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, in 1770, but he lived in Vienna from 1792, until his death in 1827. With his innovative style, he has had a great influence on Western classical music. 'Die Himmel rhmen des Ewigen Ehre' (The Heavens Extol the Glory of God) is the first line of the poem 'Die Ehre Gottes in der Natur', which was written by Christian Frchtegott Gellert (1715-1769). The music that Beethoven composed to the text, was published in 1803, as the fourth Lied (song) in a cycle of six (6 Lieder nach Gedichten von Gellert, opus 48). Thomas Doss has arranged the song - in which nature, as created by God, is mirrored majestically - into a wonderfulwork for concert band.

There are several autograph copies for different instrumentations, dedicated to different archdukes who were commanders of various regiments of the army including the Prussian regiment called Marsch des Yorkschen Corps, which is how its current title arose. Philip Sparke's arrangement enables a march by this major classical composer to be enjoyed by concert bands.
